Retirees and civilians are exempted from most of the requirements.

What was funny was watching an SF MSG who lived off-post buying a pink Cricket .22 rifle for his daughter have to get the Company Commander to sign a permit for it, and then register it with the MPs before he could pick it up and take it home.

Hey, the prices are not very good, and you have to deal with the usual on-post red tape.

I would skip it and buy from a local store like Ed's.

LOL... I convinced my daughter that the pink ones don't shoot as straight... She settled on a wood stock so she could beat her brother. Haha.

She still wants a pink .22 pistol though. Eventually I will be forced to purchase a pink gun. I'm holding hard as long as I can though. :D

Just wait until she gets older. ;)

MacDill AFB sells them and they have a good discounts too! :D

I didn't have to go thru any red tape here. Just had to leave base immediately with a time stamped receipt. It was an easy and pleasing process. The hardest part was picking the gun.

I'm glad my wife hates pink :p

On Base Purchases

I still have my Sig P226, which I purchased in West Germany and became the Importer for that weappon into the USA. Except that I had to keep it locked in the unit Arms Room, there was no hassle of any sort. Registered with Provost Martial and eventually brought CONUS. A very pleasant and friendly experience.

Fast forward to just a few years ago, I had the AAFES rep explain to me everything I had to to to purchase something on base in the States. Needless to say I told him to forget about it and went off base to make my purchase.

Absolutely amazing that the military command views Privately Owned Weapon as a near insane idea.

Your CO has to approve the purchase? So what if he doesn't like you? No AKs on display? Any guesses on that one? What about ARs on display?

Is Jim's Pawn Shop in Fayetteville still opened? I bought a few firearms there over the years. At least it would be off post.

Also, I remember that our Rod & Gun (bottle) Club in Germany could get you just about any firearm you wanted.

Times have sure changed.
If your CO doesn't like you, you go off post and don't worry about him. They do have ARs on display and some of the SIG rifles as well.

Jim's is still there...and still lacking any sense of integrity. It's bad when there reputation precedes them all the way to New York...I stick with Minuteman Tactical, Shooters on Bragg, and Ed's.

I am working at Langley, but they are selling them at a lot of places, now. A customer came in and informed me that they are selling guns at one of the service academies.

Here is a list of Exchanges selling firearms:
