The U.S. government will recognize same-sex marriages as equal to traditional marriages in all federal legal matters, including bankruptcies, prison visits and survivor benefits, Attorney General Eric Holder announced Saturday.
The expansion of such federal recognition will include 34 states where same-sex marriage isn't legal, but the new federal benefits being extended to those states will apply only where the U.S. government has jurisdiction, Holder said
Regardless of where you stand on the issue of sexual orientation, I know with out a doubt, that you support the 1st Amendment, and have in fact, sworn to defend it with your life. How is this not related?

Well said, although that crap was more about resources and money than slavery.

14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

The 14th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified on July 9, 1868, and granted citizenship to “all persons born or naturalized in the United States,” which included former slaves recently freed. In addition, it forbids states from denying any person "life, liberty or property, without due process of law" or to "deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” By directly mentioning the role of the states, the 14th Amendment greatly expanded the protection of civil rights to all Americans and is cited in more litigation than any other amendment.

Is this what you are referring to? The topic of slavery could have a whole thread all to itself .

Slavery was the sideshow. Lincoln despised the slaves but he found them a useful tool when trying to kill the 10th Amendment. Lincoln was the first big government republican. The 14th amendment gave congress the right to pass any law that they deemed to protect the 14th. In later years congress has abused that power with a series of laws that have stripped power from the states.

So you see a right delineated in the Bill of Rights as the moral equivalent to the legal approval of a deviant lifestyle?

What if your beliefs and values found it acceptable to frolic with dogs and children under the age of 10.......should I be expected to respect you?
