Orange soldier killed in Afghanistan remembered

Army Master Sgt. George A. Bannar Jr. wasn't afraid of the conversation; the Orange County native just didn't need to have it.
"He was never focused on what could happen, it was all about what he'd do when he got back," said Bannar's childhood friend, Donald
Dillon. "He knew if you let yourself get down about it, you're more likely to get hurt."
Bannar, 37, died Aug. 20 from wounds he suffered in an enemy attack on his unit in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, the Department of
Defense announced Wednesday. It was his fifth tour in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, according to a release from the U.S.
Army Special Operations Command.
He was assigned to Company C, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C. Bannar volunteered for the
Special Forces Assessment and Selection and began Special Forces training in 2001. He graduated from the Special Forces
Qualification Course in July 2003 as a Special Forces medical sergeant and served in the 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group for
five years
