I like the Flyers too. Born in Philly and my first game was seeing the Broad Street Bullies at the Spectrum. I did not grow up in Philly, though, and I am now a big fan of the LA Kings. Flyers are my Eastern Conference team. RL |
Unfortunately, I think that some "reliagnment" of teams is not only inevitable, but it is desireable, particularly in the case of those teams in small markets that struggle with solvency.
It is doubly unfortunate that the majority of these teams are Canadian, as hockey is, after all, the national sport of that great country. The sport is, however, a business. And unless the NHL is going to come up with some way to help the Canadian teams, or the Canadian government runs a lottery benefitting them, I see no way that they can survive. On the one hand, I am bummed out that the league is locked out. On the other hand, I do not yet have the coin to buy the huge satellite dish needed to suck NHL Center Ice out of the ether, so the longer the lockout continues, the better the chances that I will have my new dish in time for the start of the season. I do not see the lockout continuing forever. As I said, hockey is a business. And both players and owners are businessmen. No one makes money during a lockout. I am still grieving over the Flyer's loss to the fucking LIGHTENING last season in the Cup semi-finals. ARGH. |
A Sabres fan here.
|
Magician I feel your pain! Why are the Flyers always one game away from the finals?
As a fanatical Flyers seson ticket holder I am tired of Clarkie's antics! Please Mr. Snyder, fire this man and let the fans have the same team at the end of the season that we cheered at the first game! As for the lockout I think the players may have overestimated their sport's worth in the American market. This could go on longer than the fans wish. UGH! |
It has been awhile since I read the Philly papers, and I have not been keeping up on Flyers news, so I have no idea what Clarkie has been up to lately.
I can still remember shaking my head when he traded Rusty Fedotenko, though. That kid was all heart, and a grinder, and he just worked his ass off. And now, he has a Cup ring. He killed us last post-season. And what the HELL was Clarkie thinking when he let Mark Recce go to Pittsburgh? Recce was the heart and soul of the team. Alright. You got me started. Time to head over to phillynews.com. I hate going there. It makes me miss a good gourmet Italian sub. :) |
You mean a hoagie don't you? ;)
If I have to hear another rant on WIP about how we traded for a "mucker and grinder" I'll scream. Fedetenko definitely killed us. Glad to see he got a ring though. Recchi leaving was horrible. He offered to take a pay cut to stay and Clarke would not even negotiate with him-bastard. If the season ever gets under way let me know and I'll hook you up with a game. |
hoagie, sub, whatever.
one of those massive sandwiches made by Cavazzini's in Wilmington. They must put five pounds of fresh meat on fresh-baked bread, then cheeses, then they layer on the fresh lettuce, onion, and tomatos, then they douse it all with extra virgin olive oil. Salt, pepper, oregano to taste. yum. my doggie and I would kill one of those, along with a couple of 40 ounce beers, while we watched the game. It was our ritual. She knew when it was game night, as we would get in her car (yes, I said "her" car) and go to Cavazzini's. She would lay down on the couch next to me, ignoring Ex Wife Numba Two (like me), munching on fresh salami slices. I do not think that I missed a game in three or four years. Sure do miss Jim Jackson's play-by-play, and yes, Dorney's corny comments. Wish they would put Keith Jones in the booth with them, and retire whatshisname....you know, that other guy. Name slips my mind all of a sudden. He annoys me. That is one thing that will stay with me forever as a reminder of Philadelphia: Flyers fanaticism. I got the hockey bug big-time there. |
Cavazinni's in Prices Corner I know it well, outstanding deli! The guy your thinking of is Steve Coates and yes he drives me nuts as well.
|
Coatsey. Yup, that is him. I do not like his little shows between the first and second periods, either.
SportsNet should definitely ease him out, and put Jonesy in there. I will never forget this one time, (not in band camp), Jonesy ended up with the puck off the lower right boards, and rather than pass or try a fancy shot, he just drove straight to the net with it. He got hammered, but it was a pure balls move, and it summed up what that guy was about as a hockey player before his knees got thrashed. I miss Mrs. Robino's, on Union, too. I used to live on Oak street, just down from St. E's. Canby Park was my front yard. I loved that house. Used to work out at the Y down in the 'hood. Not the yuppy Y up the street. The new one down off....12th street? I miss Wilmington. Just got used to it, I guess. Enjoy it! :) |
Hey Goggles, can you post the addresses of these two places? I have a client in Wilmington and get there occasionally. I am anxious to try these places out.
As for the Fetodenko trade, I couldn't disagree more. That was a STEAL for the Flyers. Mark my words: Joni Pitkanen is going to be a top 3 defenseman in the NHL. And no, I don't mean top 3 on the Flyers, I mean top 3 in the NHL ala Lidstrom, Pronger, Blake. He is a franchise player who will anchor that blue line for years to come. I couldn't believe the Lightning gave him up. In hindsight, they got a Cup, but you have to evaluate trades like this over a period of many years. Pitkanen will be more than worth it. He's only what, 19? |
Magician:
I know the area all too well, in fact I patrol that district. Spent half of the summer chasing kids out of the neighborhood who were heading back to the "hood" from Canby pool. My partner and I like to check out the softball games while on a meal break during 4-12's. PM me if you like. RL: Cavazinni's address is 3206 Kirkwood highway (Rt2, Prices Corner shopping center). Mrs. Robino's is in town at 520 N. Union street. If you are going to be in town PM me and I can hook you up with anything you need (or a name/number to drop should my compadre's halt you for "testing purposes" :D . |

THANK YOU!!! |
I'm a huge Penguins fan. I'm starting worried about how much longer they'll be in Pittsburgh. I think they felt shafted when the Pirates and Steelers got new stadiums and they didn't :munchin

Scott, when you go to Cavazzini's for your Gourmet Italian Sub (which is what I highly recommend), ask the obviously lesbian fat blonde chick wearing the backwards baseball cap where the Breast Implant Tip Jar is.
It is an inside joke: she used to have a tip jar up with a note stating that it was for breast implants. Freakin' hilarious. Enjoy. I miss my old house there on Oak street. :) |
Lockout
Negative side:
As of yesterday, almost half of the Sabres have signed with various teams in Europe. Positive side: The news is giving coverage to the American League teams; The local college teams are finding a larger following ; and even the kids, the Jr. leagues, are getting some air time. There are some great young skaters on some of those junior teams. |
