 Gypsy. I havn't got an A for many moons. I can't blame it on a hang over, I don't get those. More like a target of opportunity. ;) An impulse thing, ya know.
Come on. You have all that great flavored popcorn around. Pick one and give it a shot. Push the envelope. :D |

Anyway, Joseph (my friend, the bastige) had a trained guard dog, a GSD (straight from Germany), since rumor had it the mansion was also haunted and folks would try to gain access at night and all that jazz. The first time I drove up there the dog was barking like crazy and pacing back and forth...pretty much a menacing looking animal. I, on the other hand, thought he was a beautiful dog. I approached the run with my palms up and talked softly. (Sure and I knew he couldn't jump the 10 ft fence) Francis (the dog's name) stopped barking, and sat at the fence and sniffed my hands through one of the openings in the chain links, and licked one of my palms. After a fashion Joseph opened the run and we walked in together...the dog was positively docile. I'd never make the mistake of going in alone during the first few visits, but he seemed to know I was friend vice foe. Got to the point I could walk into the run from the house, he'd trot up and greet me like an old friend. He seemed to like to stand on his hind legs and put his paws on each of my shoulders, and was "taller" than I...since I'm only 5'3" maybe that isn't terribly unusual. Interestingly, after the first time I was there he never again barked at my car as I approached the entrance to the property...and would run back and forth in the run and wag his tail. Just call me the Dog Whisperer. :D |
Nothing to do with popcorn, but I guess I can hijack my thread. Here's the link to the estate in my dog story. The chapel on the property is absolutely magnificent...the artwork on the front of the entrance is created from mosaic tile.
Disappointingly, they have cut down several areas of trees to make way for the off leash dog area. It has, in my opinion, ruined the ambience of the property which feels quite sacred. http://www.dupageforest.com/preserves/mayslake.html |

Brew-
The secret to great French Toast (don't tell Gypsy) is - leave the bread out the morning of the day before you plan to make it - uncovered - yes, it gets partially stale (use good bread, thick sliced, about 1-2"). At least 2 hrs before you plan on cooking it - mix up (for each slice of bread) 2 well beaten eggs, 1/8-1/4 cup milk, 1/8 tsp cinnamon, 1/8 tsp nutmeg, 1/8 tsp sugar, 3 drops of vanilla -beat it all together with a fork until it froths, allow to sit for 5 minutes, and beat it until it froths again. Lay out the semi stale bread in a pyrex baking dish, with 1/2 the egg milk, spices mixture in the bottom - pretty close, touching even - then pour the rest over the bread. cover with saran wrap, and refrigerate for 2 hours minimum. Melt butter in a cast iron skillet (you actually want to go to Buerre bruin) and cook a couple at a time - be careful - the soaked bread will want to fall apart as you put it in the pan - use a spatula if you need to. Cook until a dark golden brown - top wit hwhatever you like to put on French toast - prior to cooking you can (if you are more nimble than me) roll the crust in crushed pecans. Enjoy!! |

Since I'm a drug free kind of gal, I agree wholeheartedly. Oddly, I made french toast for dinner this evening. Ha! I know that bread secret...I used thickly sliced Italian bread however, and didn't have the crushed pecans. Sounds delicious! |

I generally don't eat breakfast - occasionally on weekends - let me know what time is good for you - hope you don't mind fresh ground Guatemalan Antigua Coffee - it's all I have - I take that back, I do have some Tchibo. I have to plan for a french toast breakfast - it's a lot of work, I need prep time!!! Brew - the Cinnamon Roll bread would be pretty good for this... gotta see if any of the local bakeries have it. |

Brew, how's their Honey Wheat...I haven't tried that one yet. Sheesh, now I'm hungry. |
