In vulgate soldier's Latin - case, gender and gerund were much more loosely used - mainly due to the fact that there were so many different languages spoken by the Roman soldiers, many of whom were conquered peoples, and trying to gain citizenship. The same - as you so succintly noted is true in soldier's English, or in any army - to ease communication differences.
