View Full Version : Mexico Safety Question:
Guys, anyone have any intel on the safety of travel to the City of Ixtapa Zihuantanejo, in the State of Guerrero??
Daughter wants to go there over Christmas with her boyfriend's family (all Mexican locals who own a home there). State Department says don't travel due to crime concerns.
Anyone in the AO?
I'm a bit worried: young Blond haired, blue-eyed Gringo girl.
I heard some guy named Andy Dufresne moved there after escaping from prison - word was that he bought a boat and started a charter fishing business with an ex-con named Ellis Redding that goes by the name "Red" - a man that's been known to locate certain things from time to time.
That being said,DOS travel advisories say the following as of 17-AUG-22:
Guerrero state – Do Not Travel
Do not travel due to crime.
Crime and violence are widespread. Armed groups operate independently of the government in many areas of Guerrero. Members of these groups frequently maintain roadblocks and may use violence towards travelers. U.S. citizens and LPRs have been victims of kidnapping in previous years.
Travel for U.S. government employees is limited to the following area with the noted restrictions:
Taxco: U.S. government employees must use Federal Highway 95D, which passes through Cuernavaca, Morelos, and stay within downtown tourist areas of Taxco. Employees may visit Grutas de Cacahuamilpa National Park during the day with a licensed tour operator.
U.S. government employees may not travel to other areas of the state of Guerrero, including to tourist areas in Acapulco, Zihuatanejo, and Ixtapa.
I'd definitely follow what you got from the DOS unless you are super comfortable with the boyfriends family. There's places right here in the USA that I wouldn't let my daughter go without responsible adults in tow. she may not have liked it, but now she's an adult that has to make her own choices. I just hope I passed on enough common sense to help her make good choices.
I've been to Cuernavaca and a few other nearby spots and as a grown man I'm not sure I'd go meandering about by myself. I would not want to count on the current administrations DOS be the ones trying to help bring my daughter home from Mexico if things went awry.
My daughter, her boyfriend and his family went to Mexico a year or two ago, I believe it was Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco. The first text I received from my daughter was in effect ' Dad there are police everywhere with machine guns'. She sent me some pics and there were armed police on the corners and cruising the streets what I would described as heavily armed pickups.
Nice vacation spot on coast....
Phuc......
Some folks gave me GREAT advice back-stage. I'm running it now. Thanks guys!!

Personally I'm for shackling until the notion passes but that's just me...

LMAO! True, too.

It depends.... in every city there are areas you do not go into.... almost everywhere that exists.
In Mexico there are states you do not want to go into....our neighbors, the Sanchez's, no longer visit family in Juarez. They refuse to go for some years now.
