This new Intel chip will have the hardware/software to prevent P2P sharing. Well until the hackers find a way around it. I wonder how that will effect sales from different markets.

When I was in school in the mid-90's we were issued laptops for the program. They were neat little Macs that look absolutely archaic today compared to my X40 and T42, but it was a joy to use the Mac OS, so slick and user-friendly. Then I went into Corporate America and got nailed with the Windows sledgehammer. I always wanted to go back to Apple, but it wasn't worth the hassle with software. This might make it easier.

Now that they're using a good chip maybe they'll make an affordable laptop.

IMO - Kirkpatrick missed the reason; 802.16 integrated into Intel. Rollout begins this year.

It should have happened when OSX was first released, years ago.

I definitely think that this is a good thing, though. I cannot wait to buy a miniature sub-notebook running OSX. My PowerBook Ti is just too big.

A buddy of mine...just came out to see me last week, and he had a really small Wintel laptop running XP. That was the bad news. The good news was, he was able to get multiple HOURS of battery run-time, the screen was spectacular, and it was small and light as hell. Built-in Wi-Fi, of course. It was sweet.

No one makes cooler hardware than Apple, IMO. I cannot wait to see what happens next.

I agree, their machines are works of art. Now that iPod is saving their ass, hopefully they can finally move beyond being a niche player in personal computers.

Hopefully. But the current price is still worth the admission!

I see several of these iBooks sprinkled among my classmates. Very, very slick. Makes me yearn for the good old days, especially when I have to constantly fiddle with my wireless connection. But then comes exam time, when we have to set up our laptops for the secure test-taking software. All the Apple guys need "extra attention."

I use both Mac and PCs for work. I definitely prefer Macs for most things, but Windows has got a nice library of 3D games and 3D applications...actually that's the only reason i have Windows installed on my PC.

Personally I think Apple machines will remain in the same price range as always. You pay for their industrial design and their OS design, which as has been said here...is smoking

My main hope is there is a hack so you can dual boot the machine for Windows and X and eliminate my need for to desktops plus laptops :-D

Wouldn't Virtual PC solve that problem? ( I have no idea, but I thought that was what it was for. )

The folks at Apple realized their products weren't competing with wintel so they had to do something. Mac's OSX is actually an Apple GUI on top of a Linux kernel....just another attempt to change they way they do business.

Nothing wrong with it, I just get tired of hearing how visionary Macs are. They do handle graphics like no one's business though.

Apple the "Visionaries"

It is interesting to note that every innovation Apple introduces to GUI is generally reproduced by their competitors. There are a lot of ease of use elements added since the days of the original Macintosh computer that simply weren't there in a commercial space.

My first computer was a Commodore 64. My mom had a job early on with DEC so I got to use DEC Unix as well. Never could afford one of those spiffy Amiga machines or an Atari computer, my next machine was a 486. I actually enjoyed a Commodore 64 more than Windows ^o^

I got into Macs a few months later. Those and SGI's were such a huge step over anything else I was exposed to at that time. I still remember the first time I used Photoshop 1 haha I was utterly blown away (I could go into my experiences with Be and Next but since Next is basically OSX ^_^)

Since then, Apple has taken steps forward, and a few to the left and right. Their innovative case designs alone have completely changed how PC cases were designed. Their interface, menuing, and basic system operations have been cloned (at least as much as possible barring their web of patents) by competitors across the board.

I only started using Windows when I decided to explore 3D graphics, as that is one area where some flavors of Linux and Windows have just smoked the Apple as a development and deployment platform. Not to beat their drum to loud, but Apple really does change the entire industry everytime they release new hardware or an OS.

I think at this point, Microsoft owns 30-40% of the company ^o^

If Microsoft hadn't invested in Apple several years back Apple would be out of business today.
