The man who tried to assassinate former US president Ronald Reagan is set to be freed from a psychiatric hospital and allowed to live in the community.
It comes after a federal judge ruled John Hinckley Jr was no longer a danger to himself or others - 35 years after he was detained over the shooting.
Hinckley, 61, will be allowed to live full-time with his mother at her home in Williamsburg, Virginia after Judge Paul L Friedman's decision.
There are dozens of conditions attached to the order and he will not be able to reside there until 5 August at the earliest.
Hinckley will have to meet his psychiatrist in Washington at least once a month and let the Secret Service know when he travels for the appointments.
If Hinckley relapses or violates the terms of his release, he could be returned to the government psychiatric hospital, St Elizabeth's, in Washington, the judge ordered.
He was found not guilty by reason of insanity in 1982 for the attack which wounded Mr Reagan in the chest.
Three other people were also hurt, including presidential press secretary James Brady.
Over a number of years, doctors have said Hinckley is no longer plagued by the mental illness that drove him to shoot the president on 30 March 1981.
He said he carried out the attack outside a hotel in the US capital in an attempt to impress Hollywood actress Jodie Foster, whom he had an obsession with.
For more than a year he has been allowed to spend 17 days a month at his mother's home.
And since 2006, Hinckley has completed more than 80 unsupervised visits to Williamsburg, the judge said.

It says a lot about us as a country that we are able to release the man who tried to assassinate our national leader/president/prime minister, etc.
The guy was/is legitimately crazy and other than to Ronald Reagan never posed a threat to anyone

By their own admission psychiatrists cannot predict dangerousness and often release violent patients from facilities, claiming that they are not a threat to others, or grant them privileges that lessen security procedures in place for them.
Case in point: During the trial of Sirhan Sirhan for the murder of Senator Robert Kennedy, Sirhan admitted to the killing. His own notebooks contained written specific threats against the Senator; he had gone target shooting at gun clubs immediately prior to the crime; had told a man that he was going to kill Kennedy; and on the night of the killing, he had left a firing range with a loaded revolver and gone to the hotel where Kennedy was.
Undaunted by the facts, two defense psychiatrists and six psychologists claimed that Sirhan had been subjected to childhood traumas (bombings during the
1948 Arab‐Israeli War), hated his father and was a “paranoid schizophrenic” and, therefore, not responsible for the crime.
To refute defense psychiatric testimony, the prosecution introduced a psychiatrist of its own who confused matters still further by claiming that Sirhan was not “sick” enough to be excused for murder but was too “sick” to be executed.
The jury passed implicit judgment on the psychiatric testimony by finding Sirhan guilty. He is now serving a life imprisonment.

You're right, I had forgotten he had shot several others. What he, Hinckley, did was terrible, though I do not believe he is a threat to others. He's been in a prison-psychiatric hospital for 35 years, I think he's been punished long enough.
