Originally tuned down by the Obama administration with the excuse that criminals want 60 year old 10lb 8 shot rifles ....

What is interesting is the claim that they want to sell them to Korea veterans before the anniversary this year.

They still are denying the entry of the M1 Carbines because of the a fore mentioned crime concerns.

Plenty of good ones available already.

Those are likely to be high mileage.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program has been selling them for some time.
IIRC, it is a major source of their funding.

I got my M1 from CMP. Their website has been saying "we expect to receive no more, ever" for awhile now. Good to hear that this may end up going through. Folks on some other boards have commented that this particular source has been a white whale for a number of years now. We'll see if they make it CONUS or not.

The rumor mill has been grinding out that these won't be going to the CMP, but rather some other importer.

Rather irritating that they won't import the M1 carbines. I would like to get ahold of a couple of nice ones, it was the first centerfire rifle I shot.

See "Blue Sky Imports" for the last time we had imported M1s and carbines.

The CMP won't see these.

A few years ago Big 5 Sporting Goods here on the west coast sold quite a few M-1 rifles and carbines that were imported from Korea and they were very well used. With all of the newly manufactured parts that are available now a person can actually build one.

The issue of Garands or carbines from South Korea predates the Ovomit administration. They won't be going to the CMP because they are not returning loaned weapons on the small-arms rolls of the USG. They were sold to South Korea, which is a different deal, which is why CMP won't see them (unless they wanted to start bidding like other importers *IF* the G lets them in the country). In terms of import restrictions there is plenty of bi-partisan blame to go around, going way back.

Updated link to drill-down to the article

It is also timely & convenient for the current regime to pander to veterans of all generations; they can show how magnanimous they are since these haven't made their way from Phoenix to Sinaloa. Cynical? Me?

I do agree these are likely to be some pretty "rode hard & put-up wet" guns.

Not a rumor. CMP sent an email saying they are not involved and these rifles will not be sold by them.

I expect the administration to try and block this deal with some technical bullshit.

The rifles are worth more without the import stamp, but the ATF will require the weapons to have them.

When Blue Sky was importing them from the Koreans, the import stamps were on the barrel and were initially very light. The ATF told them that they needed to be a little deeper.

Blue Sky sent word to the Koreans that this was unsat, and they started pressing the importer data into the barrel with a multi-ton press.

To the point that in most cases, the barrels were bent and in some cases, they were no longer even round.

Caveat Emptor.
