Outside diameter of the rim is 1.25", and the rim thickness (from the back surface to the first cut) is .110". I think its a Russian 20x115mm casing but I couldnt find any dimensions for that cartridge on the internet, and unfortunately there is no library where I'm at. The "77" on the headstamp looks to be a date - 1977, and the arrow is similar to the arrow stamps on Russian AK-47s from the Izhevsk factory.

Suggestion from Ammo Spec.

The round looks like the back of a cartrige for a 155 MM Howitzer round, or maybe it is foreign I am continuing to cross reference the round.

This is not a good start GrassHopper.

You received an email with directions to be followed.

You didn't...

Go back and read the message, follow the directions, then use the search function..

Failure to follow directions can be terminal...

1. Read the board stickies and rules, and comply before posting again.

2. With a stated head diameter of 1.25", and you think it is a 155mm case, that would be a neat trick.

3. Not seeing an 18 anything in your future after this start.

I would suspect the base of a 20mm case or some plastic (?) type material encasing the charge. Training round? Aircraft cartridge?.

Something big and nasty.

Well it's definitely the base of a cartidge, and I'm fairly certain that it's an anti-aircraft round. It makes sense considering where I found it too. It's way to big to be a 14.5mm ZSU cartridge and the closest Russian round I could find that matches the profile of the head and the rough dimensions is the 20x115mm.

I'm with 7624U on this. A 1.25" would be about 30mm (25.4mm per inch). A very short case is a trait of a rifle grenade cartridge which are very low velocity. An AA cartridge would have a longer case for more powder/velocity.

Agreed, it would be - but this casing was ruptured or cut by some means, this is only the head and maybe an inch of casing. The rest of it is whereabouts unknown.

Modified maybe?

We do the same thing you our spent 20mm and 30mm cases. Clean 'em, cut 'em, and lacquer 'em. End result, shot glass.

Perhaps this is one of the experimental and rare 30mm cartridges that used a short case and a very long (155mm) projectile.

I hate to breathe life into this moribund old thread, but as several have suggested but nobody's actually said, what you've got here is the whole thing. It's a casing from an AGS-30 Plamya or similar Russian automatic grenade launcher. Its dimensions are 30x28mm. (yep, it's only an inch and a quarter long or so). Its designation is 30x28B, referring to the belt that the round headspaces on.

The belt and two grooves that show in the picture are very characteristic of this round. I have forgotten what aspect of the ammo handling of the AGS requires the second groove, sorry. Pretty sure that fact is in the DIA ammo recognition book though.

As in the US military, the automatic and underbarrel grenade launchers in Russia use separate cases. The rifle-mounted one uses a 40mm caseless round.
