SR Shed Art

Does anyone have any memories (good or bad) of the art that was once painted on the SR Shed, Cadre Platform, or TMC (interior) at Camp Mackall?

All I remember was getting 100 push ups for not sweeping the snow out of our tent...

No art anywhere near the Camp Mackall cantonment area at any time when I was around there.

We did have some art in our SFTG company dayrooms, though. The one in F Company (Medics and affectionately referred to as 'F Troop' after the TV comedy) had a provocatively seated brunette wearing a jungle fatigue shirt with jump wings, a CMB, SF SSI and SGT stripes. The shirt was opened to 'nearly' expose her breasts and she had a patch over one eye, held an SF stiletto in one hand, wore a beret with 5th SFG flash, and had an eagle sitting on her shoulder. We called her 'Gretta.'

Our company 1SG (1SG Valentine) had more art on his arms than we had in any of the unit areas!

Richard,

I was there at the same time as you. (Most of 1970 and grad in early '71). I think the 1SG was Valencort (?). I stood in his office a few times

You're right--it was Valencourt. He 'chatted' with me a few times as I was an "Acting Jack' SGT as 3rd squad leader. Valencourt wasn't too bad and neither was Olivares; they gave good advice and took more of a mentoring stance with us. But the 'Hunter' ( ) was the one to avoid; his sole mission seemed to be to see how many of us he could get to DFR.

SSG Dave Nickerson, an 05B from the 6th SFG and Son Tay Raider, was our PltSgt until he was dropped...as were MANY others. CRS who replaced him. We graduated 12 of the several hundred who started the various phases of the SF Med course. Sometimes I sit and think about it all and ponder how I made it through and so many didn't. Kismet?

I know what a shed is. I even know what a quonset hut is and why it is named that.

In 1967 there wasn't no steenking sheds nor quonset huts there.

I had a poncho shelter at one point.

In 1971 there were a couple of small, tar papered sheds for the TACs and the medics. Most 'structures' were GP Medium tents--which were mainly for storing our duffle bags because we spent the majority of the time in the woods on patrol. Without a doubt, hitting Drowning Creek in the winter will take your breath away and shrink your testicles. Going back out there in 1979 to see a few friends and meet with Bob Howard about a proposed use of the area for a One-Zero training course, there were a number of permanent buildings and such; I was amazed at the upgrades made to the facilities.

And in the summer of 1970, the "shower point" was a "water buffalo". Anyone who was caught cleaning up there in their skivvies on the next to the last day at Mackall would soon find himself running back and forth over the cantonment with his M-14 over his head, shouting, "I will not take a shower in the public... I will not take a shower in the public..." ad infinitum.
