FORT BRAGG (AP) — Col. Gus Benton is preparing to take command of Fort Bragg’s 3rd Special Forces Group.

The change of command ceremony is July 10 at Fort Bragg. Benton will relieve Col. Christopher K. Haas. Haas has been in command of the unit since 2006. He led the unit on two combat rotations to Afghanistan.

Benton served as the chief of staff of the Army’s Special Operations command before coming to the 3rd Special Forces group.

Lt. Gen. Robert W. Wagner, commanding general of the Army Special Operations Command, will preside over the ceremony.

3rd Gp is getting an outstanding officer who will be a quality commander. I've had regular contact with COL Benton over the last seven months and am happy to tell anyone who'll listen that I think he's destined for "great things". Good luck to everyone. The learning curve will be "interesting" but I think it'll be worth it.

A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.
