Helluva story.

You gotta watch those old guys, at the very least, they are survivors.

I wonder if he wishes he had brought a handgun?

Whoa, that was a heck of a story. Those old guys, wow.

I read a slightly similar story about a man who was vacationing at a lodge with his wife. I forget the exact details but they were coming back from a walk when they encountered a female bear outside the lodge, with her cubs I believe. The man ordered his wife inside the lodge and for some reason, became enraged, and attacked the bear. He punched at the bear furiously in the chest, which resulted in the bear tearing his face off and giving him a few other serious injuries. I forget exactly how he came out of it alive, but they were able to sew his face back on.

I read another story as well about a hunter who while hunting found a trail of bear tracks I believe. He followed them in what he thought was the opposite direction of what the bears had gone in but were actually the direction the bears had gone in, leading him straight up to a male and female bear that were playing with each other. The bears, upon seeing him, charged him. He raised his rifle to fire but it misfired (or something like that, whatever it wouldn't fire). The bears both attacked him and he immediately played dead. The bears mauled him a good deal, but then decided he was dead, so they left him alone.

Unfortunately, he started moving again within the bears view from a distance, so they ran back and proceeded to maul him again, so he repeated playing dead. They eventually left him alone. I forget exactly how he survived that as well as I didn't read the entire story, but I know one thing, if I ever hunt in bear country, I'm carrying a serious backup weapon!

Don't want to sidetrack this amazing story, but something caught my eye in the paper this morning...in a similar vein, minus the killing of a bear with his hands:

Woman, 76, found alive after 2 weeks

Not even a comparison as far as SA goes, but amazing nonetheless. What is it with old people and their ability to adapt and overcome? Both of these stories bring to mind a great book, Deep Survival, by Laurence Gonzales. The "science" of survival is far from making any sense.

Amazing story. and to comment on the previous post, one could infer that after spending as many years on this earth as is required to elevate one into the "elderly" class, you pick up on a thing or two that would allow you to survive. The elderly have my deepest respect, as they have alot they can teach if you just listen and dont write them off.
