Attache in Cyprus found dead

http://www.reuters.com/article/world...rpc=22&sp=true

NICOSIA (Reuters) - The United States military attache in Cyprus was found dead on Monday, four days after he disappeared, the American embassy said.

The body of Lt. Colonel Thomas Mooney, 45, was found near his parked car in a remote mountainous region north-west of the island's capital, Nicosia.

Update: LINK

An autopsy showed Mooney had bled to death from a cut to the throat. A Cypriot forensic investigator said the wound was self-inflicted and there was no evidence of foul play.

"At this point in the investigation, it is now clear that Lt. Col. Thomas Mooney's death was a personal tragedy with no political or security implications," an embassy statement said.

Condolences to his family.

This is an EXTREMELY unusual method of suicide, to say the least.

This sounds pretty fishy to me as well. Of all the ways to commit suicide, this would have to rank somewhere near the bottom. I wonder if a U.S. investigation of some kind is pending. I certainly hope there is for his family's sake.

Not saying this isn't suspicious, but . . .

When I was taking criminal justice classes I sat through a 2 hour slide presentation from a local LEO homicide detective. The show was all about suicides. There were a LOT of suicide by: chainsaw/sawsall/circularsaw/knife/ sword/swiss army knife to the throat . . . you get the picture. Granted, most of the people who did this had screw loose.

While a knife to the neck may not be common, it does happen more than you would think. Maybe the guy just had enough.

Self inflicted cut to the throat? That is rare....I have heard of it, but haven't seen it in 18 years of LE. I wish I was at the autopsy.

Be nice to have a US Forensics specialist look at the autopsy report and examine the body. They can determine which direction the cut was made in and whether it's consistant with his strong side hand. But it's a helluva way to go out!
