As others have said, the show takes place in LA, there's a lot more dysfunctional families in LA than there are in Georgia, let alone the South

One thing we have to remember is, this show takes place in L.A., so yes, there is going to be anti-gun bias from some of the characters, seen so far in the "father", but it is easily knocked down by his wife (the blonde) and the Salvadorean, who we saw called him "Weak" when he stopped the blonde from "killing" the infected Asian. We also saw the Salvadorean teaching the father's kid how to handle the shotgun, with permission given from his wife (the blonde), while his first wife, has him pretty much wrapped around her little finger.
I fell this character, the father, is to show just how weak the anti-gun stance really is, and how being "weak" in a situation like a SHTF situation is. Remember, we're also comparing this show to the other one, which takes place initially outside Atlanta, where the firearms mentality is much different than that of the Socialist utopia that is L.A. Remember seeing the junkie kid trying to break into that one house, right before he saw that little girl in the window holding the doll? I'm sure you noticed all the decorative protection bars on the outside of the windows, on EVERY house in the neighborhood. L.A. ... just barricade yourself in your house and don't even think of protecting you or your family with a firearm ... no, no, no, we can't have that. I have a feeling we'll see that "anti-gun" mentality change in future episodes.
The Salvadorean I'm sure has seen martial law and the effects it has one people, or something similar, (he's "hiding" a secret, or holding something back) that's why he's going to be the pillar of strength for this group.
As far as the junky kid, that I feel was to show that this virus/disease started in the "dirty" or "dirtier" part of society, much like we see viruses and diseases start out today.
We're also comparing this show with the other one, where when TWD initially started it's run, didn't get the best reviews either, now it's the #1 show out there. Heck, it wasn't until the third season that I started the other thread.
It's only been three episodes ... give it time.

The old man is a puss and will either a.) quickly learn to adapt and not be one, or b.) be killed. Seems to be a running theme from Walking Dead.
The Salvadorean is a stand up guy, and more than likely lived through the Civil War in El Salvi, i.e. FMLN, etc.

I'm surprised they even had a shotgun next door." Point taken.
I'm waiting for all the anti-gunners to start feasting on themselves and I'd still like to know just how in the world this started. So far, they've not given much background on it. Unless I've missed something, all we know is that there were 5 other states (at the beginning) that had been declared states of emergency. As of last night's episode, that number has increased to 11. Hopefully, they give the background on the cause of all this at some point. If they say it is due to bath salts, I'm gonna be so pissed.

I'll go along with the barber shop guy, wish he was "the lead" character. Interesting turn of events with the NG showing up.Can't wait to see how that pans out now.

I held off saying anything because I was waiting until a few episodes had aired...now that they have...I'm disappointed as well. I understand that it's going to start slow and they need to develop a few of the characters first. But come on! the only one with a decent "clue" is the overweight kid from the high school? A "few" isolated cases elsewhere that aren't connected? In today's plugged in, connected society, a lot of people should have been asking a lot of questions before the riots down town. And...and...the NG shows up and everyone just rolls over and complies?...really?
I'll give it a few more episodes before I write it off...I'm waiting on Into the Badlands.

Tonight's episode, I felt a GREAT disturbance in the Force ... As if THOUSANDS of voices cried out at once, "Get Your Eye Away From That Scope !!!!!" ....
... and then there was suddenly silence.

I had a feeling I would see this mentioned here the moment he plastered his eye socket to that scope. Just goes to show you which actors have probably never fired a rifle in real life.
I also couldn't help but cringe when the soldier went into his speech about how a 900 yard headshot was so easy that Helen Keller could do it.
While the majority of FTWD's audience may not notice those type of mistakes, sticklers for realism (albeit as much as can be expected in a zombie drama) certainly do.
I can't believe that shows with these big budgets won't hire a couple of experts to have on site and inform the directors when their inaccuracies border on mental retardation.

Unless it is part of the Infotainment agenda to spread inaccuracies.

Interesting thought. That would explain why the general public is always so befuddled when the police shoot and kill an attacker wielding a knife or similar object.
In their minds, they seem to wonder why the police just won't shoot the weapon out of the assailant's hands or, when the bad guy charges the officer, why can't the LEO do a flying backflip and fire a single shot to take out the assailant's kneecap? It's an easy shot, right?
It seems everyone in TWD and FTWD is an expert marksman. It doesn't matter if the zombie is 100 yards away and the shooter is in a pickup truck bouncing through a field, holding his gun with one hand....it is guaranteed to be a headshot. Trying to explain to people that cinematic shooting skills don't reflect the real world is a feat unto itself. I've taken quite a few friends out to shoot for their first time and I've noticed two distinct things that almost all of them mention.
1) They must've all expected to be expert sharpshooter before the first magazine was empty because they are usually shocked when most of their shots aren't even striking paper at a mere seven yards.
2) Almost all of them are surprised by how loud guns are in "real life".
