France: Noriega
And another conspiracy theory comes to life...
France: Noriega Request Rejected
A Paris appellate court on Friday rejected a request by the former Panamanian dictator Manuel Antonio Noriega to be freed from prison pending a late June trial, deeming him a flight risk. Mr. Noriega has been held here since his extradition last month from the United States. He is to be tried on charges that he laundered $3 million in Colombian drug money through international banks and into French accounts in 1988 and 1989; Mr. Noriega has said the money came from payments from the Central Intelligence Agency, which once considered him a valued asset; his brother’s inheritance; and his wife’s personal fortune. A French court convicted him in absentia on the same charges in 1999. A lawyer for Mr. Noriega said his client would appeal.
