Un homme soupçonné d'"activités séparatistes basques" a été arrêté en Irlande du Nord dans le cadre de la législation antiterroriste et en collaboration avec la police espagnole, a annoncé jeudi la police d'Irlande du Nord.

La suspect, âgé de 40 ans, a été arrêté dans le centre de Belfast et conduit au poste de police d'Antrim, a précisé un porte-parole de la police (PSNI).

L'homme a été identifié par la radio publique espagnole comme Fermin Vila Michelena, suspecté d'appartenir au groupe indépendantiste basque armé ETA, et recherché par la police espagnole pour plusieurs attaques dont un attentat à la voiture piégée qui a tué un policier espagnol à Madrid en juillet 2001.

Il figure depuis décembre 2001 sur la liste de l'Union européenne des terroristes "les plus recherchés", a ajouté la radio.

Son arrestation survient après la disparition cette année en Irlande du Nord de Jose Ignacio de Juana Chaos, un ancien chef de l'ETA considéré comme responsable de la mort de 25 personnes dans 11 attaques, et recherché par Madrid pour "glorification du terrorisme".

L'ETA est tenue pour responsable de 829 morts en plus de 40 ans de campagne d'assassinats et d'attentats visant à forcer le gouvernement espagnol à céder sur l'indépendance du Pays Basque.

The police in Northern Ireland on Thursday said a man suspected of "Basque separatist activities" has been arrested in Northern Ireland as part of antiterrorist legislation and in collaboration with the Spanish police.

The suspect, aged 40, was arrested in central Belfast and taken to Antrim police station, said a spokesman for the police (PSNI).

The man was identified by Spanish public radio as Fermin Vila Michelena, suspected of belonging to the armed Basque separatist group ETA, and searched by Spanish police for several attacks including a car bomb which killed a Spanish policeman Madrid in July 2001.

This figure has been on the EU list of terrorists "most wanted" since December 2001 , the radio said.

His arrest came after the death this year in Northern Ireland of Jose Ignacio de Juana Chaos , a former leader of ETA believed responsible for the deaths of 25 people in 11 attacks and wanted by Madrid for "glorifying terrorism".

ETA is blamed for 829 deaths and more than a 40-year campaign of assassinations and bombings aimed at forcing the Spanish government to cede the independence of the Basque Country.
