Chicago shootings up nearly 200 percent in 2016

Glad to see all those restrictive gun laws being as successful as they are ...

Chicago shootings up nearly 200 percent in 2016

CHICAGO -- On average, one person has been shot every three hours in Chicago since January 1st.

Just two hours into the New Year, 24-year-old Deandre Holiday was gunned down after a fight at a New Year's Eve party spilled into the street. He's Chicago's first homicide of what's so far been a bloody 2016.

Since January 1st, 110 people have been shot -- compared to 37 during the same time last year. That's a nearly 200 percent increase.

"In terms of crime, it's been a little bit of a frustrating start," said John Escalante, the acting superintendent of police. His predecessor, Garry McCarthy, was fired in December.

"A lot of it is gang conflicts, but also heavily driven by social media," Escalante said.

What police call "modern gang graffiti," are essentially taunting messages from alleged gang members challenging each other on Facebook and Twitter.

While overall crime was down before the new year, gun violence is soaring. One reason may be police officers possibly holding back in fear of being the subject of a viral video.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel was overheard making that point to Attorney General Loretta Lynch last fall.

"We have allowed our police department to get fetal and it is having a direct consequence," Emanuel said.

Raydell Lacey's 19-year-old grandson Eric was one of the 21 people killed by guns this year.

"He was headed on the right path. You know? To his full potential," said Lacey.

Eric started a job two weeks ago, and hoped to join the Navy. Saturday he was shot in the head in an apparent ambush. Lacey says he wasn't in a gang.

"Before he passed, they said he said 'We good? We good y'all?' Then they didn't hear him any more, and he just slumped over," said Lacey, weeping.

The difference is that this year, Chicago residents are permitted to conceal carry and defend themselves so it will be become necessary to separate defensive shootings.

8 Killed, 39 Wounded In Chicago Weekend Shootings

CHICAGO (STMW) — Eight people were killed and at least 39 others were wounded in shootings across Chicago between Friday evening and Monday morning.

The weekend’s latest homicide happened shortly before 2:30 a.m. Monday in the Wicker Park neighborhood.

A 25-year-old man was driving a black SUV, stopped at a red light on Western Avenue at Division Street, when a dark-colored car pulled alongside his vehicle and someone inside opened fire, according to Chicago Police.

The rear driver’s side window of the SUV was shattered in the shooting and multiple bullet holes lined the driver’s side of the vehicle, an officer at the scene said. The SUV pulled forward and crashed into a traffic light in the northeast corner of the intersection.

The man was shot in the head, but three female passengers in the SUV were not injured, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Less than five minutes earlier, a man was shot to death in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.

Officers responding about 2:25 a.m. to a call of a person shot in the 3200 block of West Walnut found the man lying on the sidewalk, police said. The man, thought to be in his 30s, had suffered gunshot wounds to the head and back and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office could not confirm either fatality early Monday.

Early Sunday, a man was killed and a woman injured when a birthday party attended by more than 100 people was interrupted by gunfire in the University Village neighborhood on the Near West Side.

About 2:20 a.m., 43-year-old Everick Coleman and a 40-year-old woman were at the gathering in the 1300 block of West Hastings when someone opened fire, authorities said.

Coleman was shot in the head and chest, and was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:42 a.m., authorities said. He lived in the 2400 block of West Madison.

The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the left arm and back and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where her condition was stabilized, police said.

About the same time, a 17-year-old boy was gunned down in the Riverdale neighborhood on the Far South Side.

Corey Buckner and a 41-year-old man were outside in the 300 block of East 130th Street when they heard gunfire and realized they’d been hit, authorities said. They were taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where Buckner died of a gunshot wound to the head at 7:57 a.m. He lived in the 13200 block of South Eberhart.

The older man was also shot, though it wasn’t clear where on the body where he was hit. His condition stabilized, police said. A person was arrested after the shooting and charges were pending Sunday evening.

About 11 p.m. Saturday, a man was killed in a Pilsen neighborhood drive-by shooting.

Victor Alvarado, 26, was walking in the 1900 block of South May when someone opened fire from a silver car, striking him multiple times, authorities said. Alvarado, of the 2500 block of West 40th Street, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 12:38 a.m. Sunday.

Earlier Saturday on the Far South Side, someone shot 29-year-old Luis Marin several times in the head about 4:25 a.m. in the 11600 block of South Torrence, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:05 a.m., authorities said. His home address was unknown. Police said the attack stemmed from a domestic dispute and home invasion that happened in the 10700 block of South Avenue N.

An hour before that, a 32-year-old man was shot to death on the Near North Side.

Maurice Selvy was outside with a 33-year-old man in the 800 block of North Cambridge about 3 a.m. when someone opened fire, authorities said. They were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where Selvy died at 3:11 a.m. of gunshot wounds to the head and abdomen. He lived a block north of the shooting scene.

The older man was shot in the torso and listed in good condition. Police said he was uncooperative with detectives.

The weekend’s first fatal shooting happened about 12:30 a.m. Saturday in the West Ridge neighborhood on the North Side.

Miguel Bahena, 18, was walking in the 2100 block of West Devon Avenue when a gunman in a gray hoodie and light blue pants shot him in the chest, authorities said. Bahena, of the 5600 block of North Campbell, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:37 a.m.

The weekend’s latest nonfatal shooting happened at 4:17 a.m. Monday in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side. A 26-year-old man walked into Mount Sinai Hospital suffering from a gunshot wound to the right hip, police said. He was listed in good condition. The man told investigators the shooting happened in the 3800 block of South Homan. Additional information was not immediately available as Area Central detectives investigate.

At least 35 more people were shot across Chicago between 7 p.m. Friday and 1 a.m. Monday.

Blacks are more likely killed by blacks, just as muslims are more likely die by another muslim. Yet, both groups tend to blame outside groups. Oh well, here's to another 100000 years of the sweet cycle of perpetual violence <sip kahlua>

August? Hah, that ain't nuthin'

Chicago, breaking the record previously held by.... Chicago.

Quote:
After a bloody August saw homicides climb to a 20-year high, a deadly Labor Day weekend sent Chicago’s 2016 homicides soaring past 500, surpassing total murders for 2015 with four months still left in the year.

In all, 65 people were shot during the holiday weekend, 31 of them between 6 a.m. Monday and 3 a.m. Tuesday, The Chicago Tribune reported. The 13 killed brought the city’s skyrocketing homicide total to 512 – already well past the 491 logged in 2015.

"It is a complex problem with multidimensional facets to it," Mayor Rahm Emanuel said on Friday of Chicago's homicide rate. "It's not just about more police, but it will include that. But it's also about more resources for our children, more resources for our neighborhoods and stiffer laws that reflect the values of our city."
It'll be ok, Tiny Dancer is all over it.

Quote:
Police attribute the spike in gun crime during the tail end of the Labor Day weekend to retaliatory gang acts, the Tribune reported.
I guess black lives don't matter as much as some think...

Why can't we have a program like the one the Philipinos are using to eradicate their drug dealers. Hunt these gangster people down and eradicate them. When will enough be enough?

Hey Mayor Rahm Emanuel (or BO, Jr as I like to call you) - instead of enacting even "stiffer laws" how about enforcing the ones you already have on the books?
How about the judges in Chicago and Illinois keeping violent repeat offenders in prison instead of releasing them back on the streets to commit more violent crimes?

I like to think of it as a trimming of the Dem voter rolls.

I have been tempted to take the view of TS vis a vis those that kill each other in Syria and Iraq.

Let me know if you need more ammo or are done? In the mean time, carry on.

When the community cares enough and makes a tangible effort, I may consider giving it some thought.

Thugs killing/murdering thugs, it's a Win-Win.

Rahm Emanuel aka Tiny Dancer approves as does the entire left-wing.
