AD to NG questions

Gentlemen,

I'm an 18D in 5th SFG(A). I'm thinking about leaving AD and going to 20th group in Alabama for couple of years while I finish school in Nashville. For all you who have gone from AD to the Guard, how is the transition? What are the differences in teams, workloads, people, etc? Please give me any advice or wisdom you may have. I've already emailed MSG Edwards in Birmingham and am going to see him as soon as I get back CONUS. Feel free to PM me if you want.

I'm sure this has been discussed here before, but I couldn't find the thread(s). Then again, I can be a dumbass sometimes, so please point me in the right direction if I'm forked up.

Where you going to live? There are 2 1bn line companies in Al. One in Auburn and one split between Mobile and Decatur. There are vacancies in both Companies. The HALO an Scuba Teams are both in Auburn. As far as work load it is what you want at this time. You can deploy with other Bn's or wait until a mandintory activation which my never come. You usually do 1 weekend a month w/ a 2 or 3 week AT.

For the knowledge of anyone reading this thread, there are ALWAYS vacancies. For those AD dudes getting out... your Reserve Career Counceler may not find any vacancies in the system that they use to try and place outgoing guys into a NG unit... don't let them tell you that there are no vacancies and try and re-direct you. Contact a unit directly!

There is a war on and NGSF is an operational force (with a slower OPTEMPO, naturally).... we and the country as a whole can't affort to lose any qualified SF'ers that are still willing to contribute.

20th SF

As mentioned above DO NOT LET THEM REDIRECT YOU!

The 19th and 20th both need qualified personnel both for the teams and support.

Feel free to contact me at 20th Gp Hqs or this site and I will get you in touch with the unit and recruiter nearest your location.

If you are in Nashville, C Co. 2-20th SFG (A) is closer than either of the Alabama options.

Time for a map check. Huntsville, AL is closer.

20th Gp

My road atlas lists the distance as 122 miles from Nashville to Huntsville, AL, which is a straight shot down I-65. You have two choices with 20th Gp in north Alabama. Decatur has a line company, B/1/20th, and the Bn Hq is located in Huntsville. At the I-565 exit, it's about twenty miles east to Huntsville, or about five miles west to Decatur. And as stated in some of the other posts, there are always slots.
