Pretty good. Given the sheer size of the US and the flocking of guppies to their safe corners (geographically) and the commensurate difficulty in governance, he may come to realize that perhaps the Union should've left well-enough alone the first time.

Maybe its just a coincidence - but it is mostly the same socioeconomic class of people that got all up in arms a while back when historical artifacts in the middle east were being destroyed over radicalized ideology ...

I hope the democrats win big this year. Big enough that they can impeach their way down the chain of command far enough to get President Pelosi in the White House.
Then I hope they start impeaching all of these damn conservative judges.
As soon as those pesky conservative judges are gone, they can reinterpret the Bill of Rights.

....and then - ALL of you deplorable MF'ers will be shipped off to the re-education camps - forever

Yes, the same class of people, the same highly educated class of people that embrace piss and deification artwork.

Okay I'm a bit puzzled, granted it was more than a few years ago but I used to take leave to Chaple Hill and Winston Salem/ Wake Forest and they were two of the quietest campusus I'd ever seen... Even the LaCrosse Teams were filled with sportsmen. Once on the Chsple Hill campus I observed a frail homeless man move traffic cones across the road in front of traffic and no one did anything, just sat there in their cars or walked by until I went and moved them back in place.

I noticed in the news footage that while many students paraded around ( like college students probably should a little) it looked like at night it was a few well organized cadre placed the shroud and toppled the statue (Duke students possably?). I'm inclined to agree with you all they were allowed to place the shroud and topple the statue. I'll bet the administrators at UNC are liberal/ lefties haven't heard their response.

Im probably out of touch but it's counter to the South I grew to love where history, both good and bad, was respected if not revered. Hope most of the students come to realize the loss.

So, the Democrats are tearing down statues erected by the Democrats?

That's for sure Dumocrats; hypocrisy in action.......I am going camping around Gettysburg this weekend, I think I will take a close look at some of the Confederate Monuments while I am there. I read that some of those are not safe as well even though the park says there will be no removing of these monuments.

"Seven arrests as protesters clash at UNC over toppled 'Silent Sam' statue"

Here comes the backlash! Ridiculous that this happened in the first place!!! Where were the security guards???

"Seven arrests as protesters clash at UNC over toppled 'Silent Sam' statue"

At least seven people have been arrested as opposing groups clashed at the University of North Carolina Saturday over a century-old Confederate statue that was torn down earlier this week.

Three arrests were for assault, the fourth for destruction of property and the fifth for resisting an officer, Fox 8 North Carolina reported. The sixth arrest was for assault, destruction of property and inciting a riot.

There is no current information on the seventh arrest.

One person was recorded by the station stomping on a Confederate flag and then being led away by police.

Chelsea Manning, the former Army intelligence analyst convicted of leaking classified documents, at the protest, the Durham Indy Week reported.

“Silent Sam shouldn’t go back up,” Manning was quoted as saying.
Charges were filed Friday against three people cops say played some part in tearing down the statue.

Hundreds of student protesters gathered at the UNC campus in Chapel Hill Monday night to bring down the statue known as “Silent Sam.”

Protesters gathered at the spot where the statue was torn down and held signs and chanted "racists go home," according to the station. Several other people in support of the statue were seen holding Confederate flags.

Anti-Silent Sam protesters also chanted “Black lives, they matter here!” and “Cops and Klan go hand in hand!,” the Durham Herald Sun reported.

Using ropes and violent force, the protesters toppled the statute which had stood that ground since 1913.

UNC leaders and many North Carolina leaders, including Gov. Roy Cooper, criticized the protesters’ actions Monday.

“That Confederate monument has been a flashpoint and a divisive symbol for decades, and especially since Charlottesville, has been the focus of increasing frustration, anxiety and pain for people,” Chancellor Carol Folt said Thursday, according to the paper.

But Folt added: “No matter what you felt about the monument, what happened on Monday night was destruction of state property, and that is not lawful, and someone could have been badly injured. Using the full breadth of state and university processes, we will do our best to identify, and will hold those responsible accountable.”

The statue was under constant and costly police surveillance after being vandalized in recent months. Many students, faculty and alumni argued that "Silent Sam" symbolized racism and asked officials to take it down.

I am not going to hold my breath waiting for that to happen, tearing it down while the powers to be watched and stood silent was a lot easier than putting it back up will ever be.

Agree there. I get the sense that UNC is a bit chipped off that LE appears to have stood by. We'll see. (Welcome to a mini-mini-version of "the host nation was supposed to protect my embassy.") Wonder what the response would've been on toppling of a statue of MLK - something different...?

Golf,

Agree with your above statement, and have been thinking about an analogy closer to home. We have a cemetery in our state that my family members are buried at. Have gone every Memorial Day that I was in the AO, since being a child, as it has always been a given...it's where you go.

It was built in the 1800's and has a Veterans Circle with statues and monuments, as one of the first things you see when driving in. You also see flags on every serviceman's grave. The headstones are very grand in this older part, and have elaborate embellishments dating way, way back.

However, if you keep driving back to the chain link fence at the back, you realize a glaring difference. This back part is where the black folks from the town were laid to rest. It is still decorated, but the stones are very small, and some are crumbling with age.

Growing up, and even today, it seems almost embarrassing...almost. My Dad explained it to us in such a way that we understood it was a part of the history of the town, and right or wrong, was something we as kids could learn a lesson from.

In relevance to this topic, it is completely unfathomable to me that someone would go in and wreck that hallowed ground, over it's controversial history.

As a white Yankee, I have no dog in this fight. I get that people may be offended by the statue. I also fully support them lawfully protesting and/or trying to have the statue removed if they feel strongly about it. But, we are still a nation of laws and they should be followed. Vandalism is low class and wrong. But the fact remains that the Triangle is a bastion of liberalism in a generally conservative area so this is bound to be a shit show regardless.

Echos that is a good perspective IMO it is one of respect and awarness of history.

When I see a monument I try to understand it in its context. I'll bet most are not aware that even though both sides of the combatants were American they were actually treated very differently after the hostilities ended.

Confederate soldiers received no federal veterans benefits until 1958, when Congress pardoned Confederate servicemembers and extended benefits to the single remaining survivor.

From the source, page 4: https://www.va.gov/opa/publications/...y_in_brief.pdf

Many if not all were created by the Daughters of the Confederacy to honor their Fathers, sons, and neighbors...
