Submarine BBQ

Our Reconnaissance Regiment sometimes used submarines to transport them close to enemy shorelines. Small teams would then launch inflatable motor boats or canoes from the sub and make their way to the objective, do the task and return to the sub and make their way home. The trips we often relaxed affairs as can be seen in this picture taken on the Atlantic Ocean on the way north.

Steel beach BBQ! Excellent morale booster especially if there is a swim call associated.

Because it is a sub-compact? It was one of our Daphne Class, sold to us by the French if I remember correctly, the French being the only country with hi-tech hardware to sell us stuff. Mirages, Pumas, Allouettes, Super Frelons, subs. Aeromacchi, the Italian mob sold us a license to manufacture our own Impala trainers. WE got the license from FN to manufacture our own rifles and we captured RPGs for anti-tanl work because our old 3.5 Bazookas were pitiful.

Irreverant attitude

The South African soldiers attitude to ocean travel was quite irreverent. This shot was taken on the Indian Ocean going east.

Oh please tell me you had the Rolling Stones "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" blaring through the ships loudspeakers.

That's where I would prefer to be on a sub- topside. I was sent to a sub in port to pick up some classified documents to bring back to the USS Worden.

The sub was about to launch, so things were pretty hectic on board. Food and supplies were being loaded, stacked and stored high in the p ways, and I had to crawl over them. Anyways, I was escorted to the radio room, and picked up the documents I was sent for. Once I had what I needed, my escort was nowhere to be found, but I didn't really need one because: 1) there was only one way to go, and 2) I was off that submarine as fast as humanly possible.

I was definately out of my element.

No, but there was a grumpy admiral on the ship the photo was taken from telling the troops to get serious.
