Counterinsurgency Strategy and tactics
QPs,
I am often humbled after I visit this site and read for long periods of time the stories and experiences that are recounted. I refrain as best I can from posting but I would like to discuss something that has come to the front burner recently in my academic career.
Afghanistan is a mess and the COIN endeavor currently being carried out by Gen. Petraeus who basically wrote the manual on COIN, seems to be a campaign of little to show for.
I was curious about serious COIN tactics that work, but do not get enough funding and attention. From a strategic and political point of view, there appears to be emphasis on training the locals, establishing a presence, building confidence etc...
But, on a day to day basis from the point of view from the counter-insurgent, what would you like to see happen more of that higher seems to not be able or unwilling to commit to? I refer to higher as ISAF and DC--not your immediate CoC.
The COIN manual is full of guidelines and principles and many anecdotal accounts paint the picture that each insurgency is different and each application of COIN must be unique, however hindsight is often 20/20. What is not happening right now in Afghanistan from a tactical and strategic level that should?
Please humor my naivety and understand I would deeply appreciate any insight from the true professionals who have been there and done it--or at least tried only to be shut down from politicians and similar ilk.
