Ex-Navy SEAL Chris Heben lied about being shot

BATH -- The Bath Police Department filed two misdemeanor charges at in Akron Municipal Court Wednesday against Christopher Mark Heben.

Heben, a former Navy SEAL, reported being shot at the West Market Plaza at 3885 Medina Road here on March 28 about 5:40 p.m.

The charges include one count of falsification and one count of obstructing official business.

Heben, 44, of Medina, reported he was shot after a verbal altercation in the shopping plaza parking lot.

Heben said at the time of the alleged incident that the suspects fled the shooting north on North Cleveland-Massillon Road and turned southeast onto Ghent Road in a gray, low-profile sports car.

Police Chief Michael McNeely said officers combed through footage from six to 12 surveillance cameras at area businesses to see if Heben was where he said he was, and none of the cameras corroborated his story.

McNeely said it was the first time in his career he's seen someone charged with this kind of crime.

McNeely said Heben, who is the registered owner of one gun, allowed police access to that gun, and the bullet that shot him didn't match.

Police say they do not have any theories into how he was injured, but they are able to disprove his story and determined the shooting did not occur at the West Market Plaza.

During the course of the investigation, Heben communicated false information to the police.

The falsification charge is a first-degree misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to 180 in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Obstructing official business is a second-degree misdemeanor.

Heben will be served by the Bath police with a summons to appear at court. The arraignment date is pending.
