TACTICAL EMPLOYMENT OF MORTARS

B-11. ILLUMINATION
Illumination rounds can be used to disclose enemy formations, to signal, or to mark targets. There are illumination rounds available for all mortars.

a. The 60-mm illumination round available now is the standard cartridge, illuminating, M83A3. This round has a fixed time of delay between firing and start of the illumination. The illumination lasts for about 25 seconds, and it provides moderate light over a square kilometer. The gunner must adjust the elevation to achieve height-of-burst changes for this round. The best results are achieved with practice. The maximum range of the illumination round is 950 meters. This range as well as the minimum range of 725 meters must be taken into account when planning illumination support.

There are several different 60mm Illum rounds for the M224 Mortar.

This is the first one I found:

http://www.usna.edu/USMCInfo/Documents/Pubs/b2117.pdf

M721 illumination
Weight 3.75 lbs
Length 16.85 in
Maximum range 3200 meters (at burst)
Burn time 40 seconds
Candlepower 350,000
Color White w/black markings

This one covers the M83 round as well:

http://www.lejeune.usmc.mil/soi/itb/...Ammunition.doc

(3) Illumination (ILLUM). Used in night missions requiring illumination for assistance in observation. Illumination may also be used to mark targets or to signal friendly forces.

(a) M83 Series Cartridge (Figure 7.)

1. Type/use: Illumination/battlefield illum, and marking targets.

2. Identification: White w/ black markings

3. Components: Fuze-Time, M65 Series Propelling charge-M182

4. Max. Range: 931 Meters

5. Limitations: Cartridge cannot be fired below charge 2.

6. Remarks: Cartridge contains an illuminating candle/parachute assembly. Candles provide about 250,000 candlepower illumination for at least 30 seconds.

(b) M721 Cartridge (Figure 8.)

1. Type/use: Illumination/ battlefield illum, and marking targets.

2. Identification: White w/ black markings

3. Components: Fuze-Mechanical Time Super quick (MTSQ): M776 Propelling charge: M204.

4. Max. Range: 3490 Meters

5. Limitations: Cartridge cannot be fired below charge 2.

6. Remarks: Cartridge provides about 325,000 candlepower illumination for at least 40 seconds.

Hope this helps.
