What do you carry in your second line?

When I was in, I used the regular old web gear with 4 mag pouches, 2 canteens, and 2 compass pouches.

In mine I carried:

6 mags, 1 canteen cup, 1 stove

r. handside compass pouch-compass
r. handside ammo pouch-minimag, motrin/meds

l. handside ammo pouch-leatherman, BFA, small bottle of CLP, lighter, small medic scissors, tripwire, heat tab, cammie stick, electrical tape,
l. handside compass pouch-2 field dressings, eng. tape, vs-17 piece and a s. mirror.

I had the earplugs in my r. canteen pocket and my water pur tabs in my left canteen pocket.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

These days for my gear I carry all the above in a RACK or other chest rig, plus

small e-trex gps
surefire 6z (replaces minimag)
strobe
radio
sometimes also a talkabout
flares
chemlights
additional med gear
550 cord
misc e&e gear-space blanket,trashbags,etc.
spare batteries
folding saw

I add or subtract med gear/survival gear depending on what I am doing.

I have my pistol in a dropleg and my SRK on my belt.
Sometimes I'll add my leatherman and my surefire to my belt depending on what I am doing.

Just wanted to hear what some of the other folks carry in their second line. Always looking for new ideas.

1 MRE

On the front and sides
Compass
Surefire 6z or M-2
Extra batteries
Garmin E-trex
Flagging tape
Ranger Love beads
Leatherman
Leather Gloves

Lighter, Matches, Magnesium (sp) stick

100 mile tape
small bottle CLP
Large Game Bag
Trash bags
Motrin 8's

And I'm looking for a VS-17 panel anybody know where I can pick one up?

Ya, I know I should trim it down but I want to be able to sustain several days to a week if I have to survive on it.

25th ID, late 80s, we all had the same gear and all wore it the same way as per the Division CSM!

Standard LBE w/
2 mag pouches
2 1 Quart canteens
1 First Aid pouch w/pressure dressing
1 Compass
1 E Tool in Carrier fixed to the center rear of the belt
1 Standard Mil angle head flashlight

I think if the CG let him he would have done away with the 60 and Saw gunners so we could all look the same.

Weighed 42lbs, w/blanks in the magazines

Neither did we, but thats how it was in legland. Never use it, weighs a lot, but carry it all times anyway cause the CSM said so. In the 24th ID we kept them on our rucks, which stayed on the track.

First time you start taking incoming mortars or artillery, you'll wish you had taken it out about 3 hours ago.

Not much. Lots of Indians and what not out and about at night. I sleep in the morning after PT.

LOL - I dug a four man fighting position on a gravel location in about 30 seconds with my barehands the first time I hear them launch one at a drilling rig. There was natural gas leaking all over the place.

I would call the rifle, compass and map Level 1 gear.

Only if you actually plan on reaching the objective and doing something once you get there.

The thread about the Soldier's Load has a link, if you follow that to the list of what soldiers in the Box are carrying (about page 33), it might help with another perspective.
