...next level stuff that most units haven't fielded yet.
If you think the carrier gas key is backward, you shouldn't beat yourself up too much - only the most high-drag-low-speed units in the military are employing the guns in this particular configuration.
Little known fact - having the key mounted in this manner allows the operator to use regular M16 gas as well as piston gas, mogas, and diesel fuel
