While at Ft. Huachuca in 1970 our company was just a residential company for the instructors, students, and aircrew involved with the school. We only had formations when there was a specific reason like re-qualification and PT tests.

They had scheduled a PT test for the upcoming weekend when a buddy of mine from Okinawa showed up having just returned state-side. Without the PT test it was to be a 3-day weekend and he thought that we could spend the weekend at the family ranch in OK. I think he wanted to meet one of my stepsisters. We were in the barracks when I told him about our PT test. A former 1st INF SGT in the next bunk overheard us and said he'd take the test for me. I asked him how and he said he'd go to two different timers and give them each a different name. None of the HQ guys knew is at all. I agreed and off we went to OK.

Well, we got stopped in TX and when I showed my driver's license and military ID the sheriff asked if I had a pass. I showed him my Class A Pass. Too bad I never read the back. There was a 200-mile restriction on it and I was outside that range. He took us in and called my CO. Fortunately, the CO covered for me saying that he allowed some leeway for guys whose family lived outside the range a little. When I spoke to him he told me to call the 1st SGT immediately on my return.

When I got back I headed directly for the OR but was told there was a formation. I quickly changed and joined it. Top showed up and read the scores from the PT test. He had all of the perfect score guys yell out "Here". He called out my name and said, "500". When I said "Here" he just glared at me and said to see him in the OR after formation.

When I went into Top's office he said that I was the luckiest son of a bitch he'd ever met. That morning CID and arrested the CO and Supply SGT for stealing government goods and all NJ punishments were void.

There's actually more to that story . . . but it's secret.
