Memorial Stone dedicated by 5th SFG(A)

RELEASE NUMBER: 101109-02
DATE POSTED: NOVEMBER 9, 2010
MEDIA ADVISORY: Memorial Stone to be dedicated by 5th Special Forces Group

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, Nov. 9, 2010) — Fifth Special Forces Group (Airborne) will dedicate a stone at the U.S. Army Special Operations Command Memorial Plaza at Fort Bragg, N.C., at 2 p.m. on Veteran's Day, memorializing the unit's proud legacy of valor and selfless service to the nation.

Officially activated on Sept. 21, 1961, at Fort Bragg, the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) traces its lineage back to World War II when the Office of Strategic Services and the First Special Service Force collected intelligence and waged secret operations behind enemy lines. In Vietnam, 5th SFG teams trained and led units of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam as well as irregular indigenous forces. Specialized units were formed to conduct special reconnaissance and direct action missions.
The Group moved from Fort Bragg to its current home at Fort Campbell, Ky., in June 1988.

In 1990, 5th SFG deployed in response to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and conducted critical direct action missions, special reconnaissance, and advised and assisted a pan-Arab multi-national force larger than six U.S. divisions.
In August 1992, four months prior to the deployment of any other U.S. forces, 5th SFG conducted operations in the country of Somalia. Soldiers of the Group conducted unconventional warfare, direct action, special reconnaissance and coalition support.
Throughout the 1990s, 5th SFG elements conducted missions in Haiti, Bosnia and Kosovo. Soldiers from the group also executed contingency operations and training missions throughout Northeast Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and Central Asia.
Following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, 5th SFG immediately deployed for operations into Afghanistan. During the early months of Operation Enduring Freedom, Soldiers of the group worked with indigenous forces who rapidly toppled the Taliban government.
In 2003, the 5th SFG provided some of the first U.S. troops for Operation Iraqi Freedom. In addition to unconventional warfare and direct action missions conducted throughout Iraq, the Group has trained Iraqi military and security forces to enable them to carry on the fight against extremism. Today, the 5th SFG is one of the most heavily deployed units in the Army maintaining a nearly constant cycle of deployments in support of Operation New Dawn and OEF.

FOR THE MEDIA: Media who wish to cover the ceremony must contact the USASFC (A) Public Affairs Office by Nov. 10 before 2 p.m. at (910) 432-6005 or e-mail pao@soc.mil.
Media should provide after-hours contact information, to include e-mail addresses, to be kept advised of any changes to the program schedule.

Media should meet representatives of USASFC (A) PAO at 1:15 p.m. on Nov. 11 at Stryker Golf Course on Bragg Boulevard. The media convoy, escorted by USASFC (A) PAO representatives, will depart Stryker no later than 1:20 p.m.
