Attention, hipsters. Pabst Brewing Company — and its signature Pabst Blue Ribbon, the ironic, iconic favorite of the young and the cool — has sold to a Russian beverage firm after a century and a half of American ownership, an investing firm announced Thursday. Oasis Beverages, the largest independent brewer in Russia, bought Pabst, which also produces Colt .45, Old Milwaukee and Lone Star beers, according to a statement by the American investment firm TSG Consumer Partners, which will hold a minority stake.

Oasis Board Chairman Eugene Kashper said, “Pabst Blue Ribbon is the quintessential American brand — it represents individualism, egalitarianism and freedom of expression — all the things that make this country great." PBC's headquarters will remain in Los Angeles, according to the statement, but the terms of the sale were not disclosed. Pabst was established in 1844 in Milwaukee, according to the brewer's website. PBC was bought by investor Dean Metropoulos in 2010, and since then, he has managed the company with his two sons, Evan and Darren. "We are very supportive of the new ownership group and their exciting plans for the future," Metropoulos said.

Oh, well…Guess that old song about “Red Necks, White Socks, and Blue Ribbon Beer” won’t mean the same on the juke box anymore. (sniff...)

This is probably just a ploy to skirt corporate taxes. Unless they mess with the recipe you will still have that old time flavor.

PBR used to be the beer of choice amongst the senior SF NCOs around the GBC and Annex 10 and the stag bar at the Main NCO Club back when - they would be rolling over in their graves if they knew it had gone to those sons of communists.

And worst beer? My vote goes to Carling Black Label - nobody wanted to drink it...which is why I could get it at NKP for $.09 a can.

Black Label does suck too. PBR was a working man's drink for decades. It's had a hipster following for the last few years. OB in Korea was better than Black Label but even OB wasn't very good.

Funny that! I was going to post Black Label as the first beer I tasted as a young kid.

It put me off the stuff entirely for well over a decade.

Isn't PBR a hipster beer now?

Genesee Cream Ale I remember as something that didn't taste very flash.

The company that is PBR was created by some investors who saw value in defunct brands. They bought a ton of beer IP off the scrap heap (brands and recipes), and started having the beers made (they don't make it, it is contracted out) and sold. Investors like this always are looking for a profitable exit.
