How are MOS identifiers assigned?

Do you get to choose 18B/C/D/E or are they assigned to you? I feel like this topic has likely been posted before, but I couldn't find one.

Then you need to spend more time searching because it has indeed been covered.

If you only have a GED you are assigned as the A.
If you can't see and are forgetful, you are assigned as the B.
If you smash your fingers with a hammer while driving a nail, you are a C.
If you are snarly and hate everyone and just don't give a shit, you are the D.
If you are tone deaf, have tinnitus, hard of hearing, you are a E.
If you are just stupid low IQ fuck-up, you are a F.
If you are the cherry on the team, you are the Z.

Follow this and you'll go far, just not in SF.

The Bn and Tng Gp CSM's sit down with the grad class stats and select MOS's for the class.
The needs of the force are the final determiner based upon certain Army level testing scores, prior MOS experience and the desires of the soldier (dream sheet).
They do take into consideration your desires.
About 80% get their choice if I remember correctly.

Not that way anymore Pat. It's after SUT. They wait to see how many they have left, then divvy out the MOS's.

Like stated though, good scores most likely will get you 18D first, they stack the D's and along with the dividing up of the rest, the other MOS's also get the D's recycles. (those that have double recycle the D course)

ETA: it's all done through proponency, with the needs of the GP's of course...

Fig it might of changed....I liked the old way ...proponency was represented by a SGM and we had 'slots' to fill but took our time matching folks to ind MOS's.

Three of my favorite words. Right up there with "shake and bake". Worst thing about civilian life has to be the lack of good fire missions.
