I want to take my kids fishing there next week. Any suggestions other than "charter a boat"?

Don't take the "three hour tour" with the Skipper.

Boat prices may be better than you might expect. We went out for 1/2 day in Kona and it was only 400 total for the boat and up to 6 people. The economy has had a bit of an impact on the charter boat industry.

Sir, if you're about to hire this helicopter and you see a red Ferrari anywhere close, get away as fast as you can before you get hit up for 'gas money.'

Fishing with rod n reels from the shoreline. Not so hot in most areas along the coastways, The good areas are very dangerouse for children because of waves, currents and rocks. For deep sea fishing I recommend the US Airforce Military charter J boats out of Pearl Harbor. best for the military price.
There is good easy fishing for small mouth bass and blue gill along some areas of the Nuuanu stream from the collusium on towards the Pali, and up in east range, behind the old 25th Div RECONDO school. You may find Talapia in some of the rivers at the mouth entering salt or brackish waters.
Aside from that, spear fishing is the fastest way to catch fish, lobster, octopus, etc.
Get with some of the locals there, they may show you the good spots and how to get what you want.

Took a nice three-hour tour today with a real nice boat captain and his little buddy.
Anyone recognize this island they took us to?

Yep, Moku o Lo'e, an island in Kane'ohe Bay, is the island they filmed for the wide-angle view of Gilligan's Island. Photo taken from house of some friends who live in Kane'ohe.
Diving tomorrow, fishing Thursday. Today it's the beach and then a dolphin encounter for Ben and a ray encounter for David at Sea Life Park.

Oahu
I was there a few weeks ago!!
If you get a chance, pick up the book, "Oahu Revealed". It's a tour book that pulls no punches about where to go and what to see.
And try to stay healthy! We were "lucky" to enjoy TWO ER visits while we were there (Dad got dehydrated and the wife had a 24 hour stomach flu).
And WM is right, eat at Dukes! I ate there and the Dukes in Malibu and they both rock.

We fished yesterday, mostly bottom fishing near Pearl Harbor so the kids could catch stuff easily. We also trolled on the way to and from the bottom fishing sites. We got a bunch of triggerfish, mostly pinktails, plus a lizardfish, while bottom fishing. I got a little kawakawa tuna on the way back, which we will eat as sashimi for lunch today. Here are some pics.
