Berlin Airlift "Candy Bomber" turned 100
Colonel Gail Halvorsen is still walking the planet and recently turned 100.
He came back to command the Air Group at Tempelhof while I was in West Berlin. Remembered by this ol' Army dog because they had, of all the countries and services, the best NCO club ('Silver Wings)' in the city. Great bands, hot women and surf & turf flown in from Bangor every Friday. Also, they had Masters at Arms that would kick out ossifers trying to sneak in. "But your dates are welcome to stay. Right this way Ladies."

At Scott AFB in TRANSCOM, they have a Halverson conference room. GREAT pictures of him and all he did during the war. What an amazing individual. Can't believe he's still kicking!!!

I ran occasionally with some zoomies that were there while he was CO and they were just delighted he was there. One of those things where the attitude from the top makes itself felt all the way down.
Many misjudge hearing about the airlift and think the act of dropping the candy defines the man. They miss the fact that it's the other way 'round, and the character of the man is what led to the act.

Hmmm...that last part doesn't sound like a very happy thought of the day but if 2020 has done nothing else it has clearly shown the path ahead if evil people are allowed to be in control.

A big yellow school bus lumbered past my driveway today. I never thought seeing one of those would bring such happiness. I may never complain about being stuck behind one again.

That’s certainly a good feeling. I’m lucky my kid catches his before the cul-de-sac, he has two chances to miss the bus.
So happy to hear kids near you are returning to in person learning. So much damage done to them over this fear.
And yes, thanks for stopping for the bus.
One of my SF Brothers lost both his Elementry aged children in a second because a driver ignored the lights. God continue to bless him and his family.

ODNT,
How horrible for your SF brother. What a senseless loss. I would be very tempted to hunt down the asshole who thought his time was more important than waiting a few minutes for a stopped school bus.
But yes, on a happier note, it's good to see the kids back in school.

Meet Pearl, my brother and family were approved and adopted her from a rescue today! She is a Shepherd mix and was born Dec 7, hence her name.
