Washington D.C. Homeless Capital of the United States

Washington D.C. Homeless Capital of the United States. Our socialist city of Wash DC has a new honor. Well done you liberals..... well done. Enjoy your new status. What's also amusing is that euronews.com is posting the story and not the ultra left-wing American MSM........ surprising huh.

Homelessness in Washington DC reaches record levels
08/02 15:14 CET

Washington DC is struggling for answers after figures reveal that a record 4,000 people now live in the capital’s homeless shelters.

It is an expensive and complex problem for the city as authorities are legally required to provide shelter for those in need when temperatures fall below freezing.

As many as 12 new homeless families contact the city for help every night.

Anthony White is one such man who has fallen into the homeless trap: “I feel hurt on the inside, I do not feel like a man on the inside, because I can’t provide for my family, I can’t provide for my kids. And I’m asking everybody for a handout.”

An acute shortage of affordable housing, rising rents and low-pay are key factors.

Jasmine Hayes is from the Council of Homelessness:
“DC is an example of what is happening in cities across the country – there is a severe lack of affordable housing. I think anywhere in this city you see a lot of construction and building but this is not affordable housing for the really low-income families and individuals that need access to those kinds of resources.”

The problem has been acknowledged by the administration with President Obama announcing an extra $345m to tackle the issue nationwide.

Although I suspect everything except a BIGGOV soultion will be lost on Jasmine Hayes...a few moments listening to Thomas Sowell might open some on-the-fence listeners to consider free market solutions.

Try to construct or renovate real property in a DEM controlled area - the excess regulation and the immediate hit in increased property taxes is stifling. I just finished a relatively small project - not yet finished paying for it - and just got whacked with a substantial increase in property taxes. No increase in revenue mind you as the properties are all under lease. No grace period, no phase in...doesn't exactly motivate producers to take on that next project. Oh, and the idiot in the WH wants to increase capital gains tax.

Moreover, I can assure the powers that be in DC that a $15 an hour minimum wages won't do it...employer's are constrained by their budget for total wages and the 1/3 or more that get no hours due to the cost increase - really loose out. Of course, the political elite don't really care about them - bread and circuses.

Wait until the homeless find out that's it the liberal elite that's causing the problems in the first place.....

Sorry - not expecting that to happen. You're talking about "low information" voters miraculously becoming educated, discerning, and engaged. Again - not going to happen.

A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.

What good is affordable housing when you do not have the means to pay for it?
