Army eyes new bases in Europe

The U.S. Army is scouting locations in Germany for potentially basing more soldiers in Europe, where a post-Cold War period of military downsizing in undergoing a reappraisal.

America probably should have left a larger presence there after the Cold War ended.

Poland or Hungary would be my choice for basing.

Precisely.

And Obama bragged about bringing the units and their equipment home.

Agree that moving East makes more sense. Many of the restrictions on training make Germany problematic. Flip side is that permanent bases in Hungary, Czech or Poland would raise hackles with our Russian "friends"

Good. Establish the bases. Then, the numbers and types of units assigned to those bases could be partly dependent on Russia's level of alignment and cooperation against China and maybe their further development of interests in Xinjiang and Mongolia, while Central and Eastern Europe can feel a bit more secure with the West more firmly behind them.

I just had a crazy thought that it would be a good idea to have full control of a canal between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

I've noticed quite a few friends rotating through Eastern European bases for 6-9 months at a time. I suspect (and they agree), it's not going to be overseas PCS tours as much as rotating COHORTs in and out. I guess the answer is somewhere between an overseas tour and REFORGER....
