34th Cassinga Day Parade

Last Sunday, the 34th Cassinga Day was celebrated in South Africa. The Battle for Cassinga was an airborne attack on Communist Terrorists in their base 250km behind the lines by South African paratroopers. The attack was lead by Colonel Jan Breytenbach, South Africas most decorated soldier.Colonel Breytenbach was also the founder of the South African Special Forces Regiments as well as 32 Battalion, a mixed race unit comprising ex enemy and white officers who operated exclusively behind the lines. He was also the founder of the 44 Parachute Brigade which saw its first action at Cassinga. In this photograph, taken on Sunday, Jan Breytrenbach sits next to me, in green jacket, with the remaining Cassinga Vets in our area.
