U.S. Consulate Attacked In Pakistan

April 5, 2010
Three explosions, two rocket attacks and subsequent gunfire have been reported in the near vicinity of the U.S. consulate in Peshawar, Pakistan, on April 5. The attack occurred early afternoon local time when the consulate would have been full of both American and local employees. The death toll is reported at 36 but is expected to rise.
There are no assessments yet of the damage that the consulate building has sustained, but reports indicate that the explosions led to the collapse of other, adjacent buildings. Pakistani soldiers are also reported to be engaging militants in gunfire, indicating that militants are actively engaged in an attack near the area - possibly with the intention of breaching the U.S. consulate.
Many U.S. diplomatic missions (including the one in Peshawar) have a number of built in security features, such as a perimeter wall, ample stand-off distance between the buildings and the wall, reinforced concrete structure and windows and marines stationed inside to ward off attacks. While militant activity in the tribal belt of northwest Pakistan has led to regular attacks against targets of the Pakistani state, today’s assault against the consulate is an extremely rare direct attack on a U.S. target.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Islamist militants attacked a U.S. consulate in northwest Pakistan with car bombs and grenades Monday, killing three people, hours after 41 people died in a suicide attack on a political rally elsewhere in the region.

The assaults illustrated the resilience of militants in the country despite intense army operations and U.S. missile strikes in their northwestern havens near Afghanistan.

After the car bombs exploded at a checkpoint outside the consulate in Peshawar, militants dressed in security uniforms fired mortars or rocket-propelled grenades at the heavily fortified compound in an attempt to make their way inside, said a Pakistani intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

"I think they could not manage to get inside," provincial Senior Minister Bashir Ahmad Bilour told reporters outside the consulate.

The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad said the militants attempted to enter the building and fired grenades and other weapons. It said no Americans were killed in the assault, but did not say whether the building itself was damaged."

SSDD in that region - I have a close friend who was awarded one of his two 'Blue Stars' for his actions in '79 when the AmEmbassy in Islamabad was attacked, overrun, and burned.

And so it goes...

One dead, 11 injured after US consulate in Pakistan bombed, NewsCore, May 20, 2011 3:36PM

A BOMB targeting two US consulate cars exploded in Pakistan's northwestern city of Peshawar today killing one person and wounding 11 others, police and the US embassy said.

The Pakistani Taliban has since claimed responsibility for the attack.

"Two vehicles of the US consulate were on their way to the consulate when they were attacked," US embassy spokesman Alberto Rodriguez said.

"One vehicle was damaged. There is no death among our personnel and there are no serious injuries," he added.

"Only one car was hit. In that car there were US citizen diplomats and a Pakistani driver," Rodriguez said.

Pakistan officials confirmed a local man riding on a motorbike was killed and 11 others wounded, including two foreigners.

"One person was killed, he was passing on a motorcycle," senior police official Mohammad Ejaz Khan said.

Official: 4 killed after militants attack Pakistani naval air station

By the CNN Wire Staff
May 23, 2011 -- Updated 0111 GMT (0911 HKT)
(CNN) -- At least 10 militants attacked a naval air station in the coastal city of Karachi late Sunday, leading to several explosions and an hourslong gunbattle with Pakistani forces that killed four naval officials, Pakistani officials and witnesses said.

"The naval commandos and the naval marines are tightening their grips on them," Pakistani navy spokesman Irfan Ul Haq told CNN around 5:30 a.m. Monday. "The situation is under control."

Besides the four dead, Haq said that nine navy personnel were injured in the attack on the grounds of the Mehran base. He did not have the number of militants who died or were injured.

Two witnesses on the scene -- including Amjad Bashir and Talha Hashmi -- reported at least eight explosions, including two within 15 minutes of each other around 4:30 a.m. Typically, each blast was followed by a sustained exchange of gunfire, Hashmi said.

The violence began around 11 p.m. Sunday, when 10 to 15 suspected terrorists launched their assault carrying hand grenades, automatic weapons and rockets, Haq said....

The nation's military personnel responded with what Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik called a "major operation" at the naval base, which is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from Karachi's main airport.

But by 5:30 a.m., the fires were out and smoke had largely dissipated. By then, Haq said that gunfire was still being traded back and forth, while stressing that Pakistani forces had the militants surrounded.

"They have cornered them," the navy spokesman said. "They are exchanging fire, but hopefully the operation will terminate soon."

According to the Pakistani navy's website, the Mehran base "is efficiently supporting day and night operational activities of all (naval aviation) squadrons." A host of courses are also offered on its grounds, from helicopter and air navigation instruction to sea survival.

Karachi itself, which is considered the main commercial hub of Pakistan, has seen a drastic increase in political, ethnic and religious violence in recent months.

Just over three weeks ago, three people were killed and at least 20 others were injured when a hand grenade exploded at a gambling club in the southern Pakistani city.

The grenade was tossed into the club by one of two unidentified people riding past the facility on a motorbike, according to Javed Baloch, a senior police official in Karachi.

The Taliban were behind an April 28 roadside bombing on a main road through Karachi that left at least five dead and 10 injured, according to Ihsan Ullah Ihsan, a spokesman for the group.

Two days earlier, three were killed and more than 30 wounded when remote-controlled bombs detonated near two buses carrying Pakistani navy officials.

Haq said it was too early to determine if there are any connections to, or lessons to be learned from, the latest attack.

"Once this operation gets over, then the ... assessment will take place to see if there is any similarity," he said.

Yeah for ME. Whatever.. Karachi has about half of its population of the ethnic group known as the Mohajirs, or immigrants from India. This Group has a greater care for women efforts to obtain political rights or equality and literacy rate higher than the other ethnic groups in Pakistan. Unfortunately, there is still violence in this city.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2010/...6AE0W920101115

This city is divided into three parts due to these gangs. I feel that more is gang related than terrorism or acts of terrorism. Pakistan’s action against militant violence in recent years may be great in many eyes, but has been facing a threat of urban “terrorism”. Something that Pakistan’s great ISI set up to battle India internally through an external entity. Now they learned from the schooling they got from their ISI trainers and now are running drug and their ties to "The Golden Crescent". Most Gang Bosses and leaders are in some way closely connected to terrorist groups via the illegal drug trade of this "The Golden Crescent" along with involved in prostitution and trafficking of illegal aliens.

Pesh attacks was militants and terrorism, this is Karachi may or may not be terrorism. Karachi is very hard to tell which one it is. Karachi is so messed up with their gang problem. Governmental Force don’t go into certain parts of the city due to which Gang “RUNS” that section of the city. Pakistani Forces don;t own or run about 40%, so who knows what is what.
