in '73, when the maroon beret was first issued, all DIVARTY units wore a solid red flash...7th Group was not amused, IIRC...

Understandably ! I much preferred the two gold stripes (2nd Batt) than the solid red. One of my other 13F's went to 7th Group from the 2/321st after Pre "Q" and the "Q" (it was called something different than SFAS at the time) and he came back to the barracks in Ardennes sporting his new Green Beret with the 7th Flash and SF crest. We bowed in worship.

319th went back to the red flash with gold stripes. I was 1/319th from 96-00 we had just one gold stripe.

Red Flash

I do not know if the Red Flash was as much a copy of the 7th Group flash as is dictated in this thread. Although RED, it is the artillery color. Much like the infantry "Turn Blue" after AIT by having a family member place the Blue cord on their right shoulder, the red cord (whatever it's called) used to be standard on the class A's as for artillery MOS's.

I believe that you will discover, if you look, that SF was wearing berets long before the Deuce, and that the 7th Group flash predates the DIVARTY flash by many years.

I am now inprocessing at Fort Bragg. I proudly wear the 3rd SFG (A) flash and the De Opresso Liber crest as the unit to which I am assigned.

I'm a Military Intelligence support guy. But I wear the flash proudly.

well, i was in the 307th Engr. Battalion when we got the maroon beret...initially, we wore the unit crest on a beret, as there was no flash yet...the first guys in the division to wear flashes on their berets were DIVARTY...now i'm not saying that the flash was later artillery red, but in the summer of 1973, DIVARTY guys i knew bought 7th Group flashes at the PX...

At that time support people, or people assigned to the group and not yet Airborne qualified, wore the Green beret with no bar or flash just the Regimental crest. Of course this was in the early Sixties. When I first went to the 17th, in June '61 the Green Beret was not authorized yet.

I was drafted into the 5th group in the Fall of 1965 to serve as a Como specialist in RVN. After my tour was finished, I was asked to stay in SF, I humbly accepted and always felt gratitude toward my many friendships made during my tour. At that time non SF qualified personal wore the green beret with a candy bar flash. But in RVN everyone wore a full flash. After I was enlisted to "S" status, I wore a full flash in the third group at Ft. Bragg.

Welcome aboard!

(I was also in 5th, but still in diapers when you were there!)
