Master Sergeant Roy P Benavidez

Hoping some of you knew Roy when he was in the 5th Group and MACV-SOG.

Anyway, the family and friends of the late CMOH recipient are trying to get a school named after him in his "home town" of El Campo, Texas. I am proud to say that he was a great friend to me and I want badly for this to happen.

Roy was born in Cuero, TX but considered El Campo to be his home and his family still lives here today.

After all of the things that have been named for Roy, nothing in his home town carries his name and we want the Middle School here to be named after him since that was the last school that Roy attended.

If you would care to write a letter to our local paper it will get printed and people will read it and I think it would help to move this effort along.

Go to https://leader-news-dot-com.bloxcms....s/submit_news/ and fill in the information there and tell the citizens and School Board members what you think.

El Campo has produced a number of Green Berets or Special Forces Soldiers and we're proud of them and all of you.

Jeffery Mc Clatchy, Jr was a Specialist Five, FOB 3, CCN, MACV-SOG, 5TH SF GROUP who unfortunately was KIA 03/01/1968.

Jack E. Reed from El Campo was in the 5th SF.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Thanks for posting this! I am new to this site.

Roy P. Benavidez is my dad. We are really close to presenting the signatures that we obtained to the board.

Again, thanks for your support!

I agree, it is a no-brainer, but we are still lacking 113 signatures. The person in charge has worked hard on getting the signatures that we have, but we are still lacking. It's very sad to think his hometown has to get signatures in order to name a school after their hometown hero.

Thanks for the comment, none the less.

TMM, I used your fathers stories to inspire the current generations of GB's I hope others understand what his level of commitment to this nation means to us within Special Forces....BTW I responded to the news paper in support of naming the middle school in his honor.

Thank you! I truly don't think many people in our town of El Campo understand his level of commitment to our nation, as you say. We are still getting negative comments about the renaming of the school. I was just on the El Campo Leader-News Facebook page and read some disturbing remarks about why El Campo should NOT name the school after him. Sadly, some people just don't have a clue. I appreciate your support, none the less. Thank you for your message and for responding to the newspaper. I truly appreciate it!!!!

Here's an update: 113 more signatures are needed and they must be El Campo registered voters. Go to the El Campo Leader-News facebook page and like it. Then, scroll down to see the petition on my dad that was posted. Some nay sayers are posting negative remarks as to why the school should NOT be named after him. It's sad to hear and read these negative comments. You would think his hometown would want a school named after him. I guess not. Breaking into Fort Knox, I think, would be easier than getting a school named in his honor. Just saying.

You have to like the page in order to see the post, I think.

Roy P. Benavidez School (renaming of it is seeing opposition)

Hey all,

This is Yvette Benavidez Garcia, Roy P. Benavidez' daughter.

I'm posting on this site in hopes that whoever is reading this can help.

Back in 2017 we asked for your support in helping to rename a local school after my father. The school looking to be renamed is called Northside Elementary. It is located in the town of El Campo, Tx, the town in which my father retired to and lived until his death. Just so you'll know, it is not named after anyone, just a location on a compass.

A local elementary school teacher started the effort about 4 years ago to rename the school after my dad. It has taken her this long because she's had to get 15 % of El Campo's registered voters to sign a petition to get the name changed. That's about 1500 signatures. On top of that, she also had to verify that those who signed were actual registered to vote. She recently completed her quest and presented it in front of the school board.

As with anything in life, she was met with opposition. There are some people in El Campo who do not want to see the school named after my father. They believe that my father doesn't deserve the honor because he wasn't the only one who fought in the war. They also believe that the town does not need to single him out. Furthermore, they believe that he has too many things named after him already and therefore doesn't need the school renamed after him.

All in all, whatever their reasons for opposing this are we believe that our school kids need this honor in order to help inspire them to be the best that they can be. My father devoted his life to our youth and walked those very halls at Northside Elementary. He spoke there numerous times instilling the importance of getting an education, staying off of drugs and staying away from gangs. He was and continues to be an inspiration to all.

If you can find it in your heart to write a letter to our school board on my father's behalf, I'd appreciate it. We want to flood their emails with letters of support in the renaming of the Northside to Roy P. Benavidez Elementary.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Here are the emails to our board members:

it occurs to me

as TX is being overrun by diseased Californians, SOMEBODY should bring this to the attention of the Trump camp as an issue. SOMEBODY here has GOT to have a hook.
