French election: Macron 'defeats Le Pen to become president

I'm not a France watcher so I can't say I have any particular opinion about either Le Pen or Macron. Macron won basically 65% to her 35%, so there is that. The interaction with the current events in the ME will probably tell a lot, and there's the question of Macron's support of the EU and how Brexit is going to ring with France in the economic chambers.

I'm not optimistic. I'd like to be able to look at the big picture, the geo-political and the economic perspectives and gain an appreciation of where the world's military posture is headed in the next 5-10 years. I have a feeling which is not altogether uncommon in old men that we're about to re-live one of the world's great and horrible war epics. An epic from which our country will be forever changed on the other side.

French election: Macron 'defeats Le Pen to become president'

Centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron has decisively won the French presidential election, projected results say.

Mr Macron defeated far-right candidate Marine Le Pen by about 65.5% to 34.5% to become, at 39, the country's youngest president, the results show.

Mr Macron will also become the first president from outside the two traditional main parties since the modern republic's foundation in 1958.

He said that a "new chapter of hope and confidence is opening".

Mr Macron's supporters gathered to celebrate in central Paris after the bitterly fought election concluded on Sunday amid massive security.

The Macron team said that the new president had had a "cordial" telephone conversation with Ms Le Pen.

In a speech she thanked the 11 million people who had voted for her. She said the election had shown a division between "patriots and globalists" and called for the emergence of a new political force.

Ms Le Pen said her National Front party needed to renew itself and that she would start the "deep transformation of our movement", vowing to lead it into upcoming parliamentary elections.

She also said she had wished Mr Macron success in tackling the "huge challenges" facing him.

President François Hollande congratulated Mr Macron and said the result showed the French people wanted to unite around the "values of the republic".

The BBC's Hugh Schofield in Paris says this is the most remarkable success story of how a man who three years ago was utterly unknown to the French public, through sheer self-belief, energy - and connections - forged a political movement that has trounced all the established French political parties.

There were scattered boos as the projections were announced. A few moments of quiet, uncertain chatter followed. Then supporters gave a subdued rendition of the French national anthem. Many were carrying blue-coloured roses - Marine Le Pen's chosen symbol.

The defeat will not have come as a surprise - the fact that such a small venue was booked is an indication that the campaign suspected it would lose.

There were cheers for Marine Le Pen as she delivered her speech. During an interview afterwards, one senior party official explained to me that a new movement would now be formed - he didn't give a name for it. Once I finished the interview, he raised his glass of champagne and said "Vive la France".

Paris (AFP) - A third of French voters declined to choose between centrist Emmanuel Macron and far-right leader Marine Le Pen in Sunday's presidential election, either abstaining or spoiling their ballots -- a record rate in nearly half a century.

According to official results with more than 80 percent of votes counted, the abstention rate stood at 24.52 percent -- the highest since the presidential election in 1969.

In addition, the interior ministry reported a record number of blank and invalid ballots, accounting for nine percent of all registered voters, compared to two percent in the first round.

"That would make a total of one French person out of three who decided not to choose between the two candidates. It's really a lot for a presidential election," Anne Jadot, political science professor at the University of Lorraine, told AFP.

Macron claimed a thumping victory Sunday with some 65 percent of the vote, but it was the first time since the 1969 election that participation in the second round has been lower than in the first, which saw him and Le Pen go through to the run-off as the highest-scoring candidates.

It's more of a generational thing. While millennials and generation Z get a lot of hate, they're actually becoming more conservative while the boomers are stuck in their old ways. Give France more time for millennials/gen Z to grow, then we'll see the mass right wing movement of elected officials. Hopefully the Muslim population isn't out of control by then.

Almost half of young French voters voted for Marine Le Pen in the presidential run-off, early indications suggest.

Some 44 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds backed the Front National leader, compared with 56 per cent who voted for centrist Emmanuel Macron, according to projections.

The far-right Ms Le Pen secured more support among young voters than any other age group.By contrast, she was backed by just 20 per cent of over 65s.

Overall, forecasts suggest Mr Macron secured around 65 per cent of votes to Ms Le Pen’s 35 per cent.

Their 6% percent make up of the population isn't enough to largely control and sway votes, yet... Now of course I'm aware of their ghettos, sharia zones in cities, and ever growing population. Yeah those are not under control. I'm talking about Muslims not being able to control or significantly impact future votes.

+1 The only decision the French voters will have is which version of Sharia they'd like this week.

Merkel's little puppet is now an ally in punishing the other Euro states who don't want to play in her end-game; and who may look for support from a different azimuth... literally.

France new boss has an interesting story with his much older wife that started when he was her student while attending high school.

If she's a hard core leftist, that will make for jucier Manchurian Candidate stories than with President Obama.

As I understand it, poor voter participation left a LOT of folks on the sidelines in France. Possibly the lowest turnout since 1981, but before all ballots have been fully counted and compared.

France also seems to have far lower big brand social media participation(Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).

France has always been a Western outlier in terms of mass media, entertainment content, and internet/social media.

At one point France had their own domestic "internet" called Minitel that still had 10 million connections less than a decade ago, before it was shut down capitulating to the global internet.

Despite all the hate directed at major internet social media properties, particularly their leadership/shareholders......which way do users actually vote?
