My Happy (and Sad) thought of the day

365 days from today I will be a 100% civilian for the first time in 30 years.

Mixed emotions. Lots of memories. Lots of men in my life who have influenced me. Some who are sadly no longer with us.

A strange transition to taking care of self and family at the forefront... A very strange concept, indeed.

My father racked up another age-graded American record in running.
I believe he still holds the American record for the 10k road race for men over 70 years old with a time of 40 minutes 15 seconds.

He just set the American record for the 1 mile road race for men over 75 years old with an unofficial time of 6 minutes 18 seconds.
It's being reviewed and may be adjusted to 6 minutes 16 seconds.

Congrats! I'm 69 and can run a mile in . . . a while.

Almost melancholy but...

Even though my uncles all warned me as I departed "Don't volunteer for ANY-thing!" I knew I wouldn't listen. So I was lucky to spend a nice chunk of my Army time in West Berlin back during the cowboys & indians days of the Cold War, sometimes on the other side of the wire. Everyone was a potential asset for everyone else. The damn place was like Mad Magazine sometimes...

But it occurred to me earlier tonight, as my genius grand-daughter indulged a FOG in his musings, that this weekend isn't just about the coming Armistice Day, or my friend's impending USMC Birthday, but another date that Ronald Reagan knew in his heart would come.

I dearly wish I could've been back in West Berlin, tomorrow night, 30 years ago.
What a time & thing that would've been to experience, as people flood the border control points, and Vopos lay down their SKS's and walk with them.

So, really it IS a happy thought. And my happy thought is again to all you Communists and your Socialist drones. Have one of these on me.

I suppose I should forgive myself for not being there.

Hell, even the CIA missed that one.

New shoulder

After many years of pain I had surgery two weeks ago. The rotator cuff was beyond repair and I ended up with a reverse shoulder replacement. No pain now but I have a lot of hours of boring time ahead of me as I heal. Through conversations with other members of this board I know that my condition is not unique and that I am fortunate in the fact that my issue could be addressed.
