Syverson, Major Paul III

A Fort Campbell-based Green Beret killed this week in Iraq died in a rocket attack, the Army said Friday.

Maj. Paul Syverson III, 32, was fatally wounded Wednesday when a rocket exploded near a group of soldiers during an attack on Logistical Support Area Anaconda in Balad, Iraq, the Army said.

Syverson was assigned to the 5th Special Force Group at Fort Campbell, the Army post straddling the Kentucky-Tennessee border. He is the fourth soldier from the Special Forces unit to die in the Iraq war, and the 62nd from Fort Campbell.

Syverson, of Arlington Heights, Ill., graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1993. He is survived by his wife, Jackie, a seven-year-old son, Paul, and a two-month-old daughter, Amy Elizabeth.

He was promoted to the rank of major on April 29. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for helping put down a November 2001 prison revolt in Afghanistan.
