The change went into effect in USASOC in January 1993. Support personnel went to maroon berets, unless they were Ranger-qualified, in which case they could wear black. I have no idea what happened after the Rangers changed to tan and the legs went to black.

Check the crest as well, IIRC, one of the artillery units on post (82nd Divarty?) coopted the solid red flash for their unit as well.
Damn redlegs!

you missed some real grade-school shenanigans when the 82nd first got maroon berets back in '73...

There were some shanigans in '69 with the 82nd at Bragg over berets. Ours.

Sure it would be funny to hear the stories. I heard about a number of people driving around in convertibles blasting Prince's "Rasberry Beret."....
Never checked snopes on it though....

I wore a "Candy Bar" for awhile in the 17th SFG(A) It wasn't just for support people. In my case, it meant I was Airborne qualified and assignd to that group. Only SF qualified wore the full flash. (No Tab in those days.)
At that time support people, or people assigned to the group and not yet Airborne qualified, wore the Green beret with no bar or flash just the Regimental crest. Of course this was in the early Sixties. When I first went to the 17th, in June '61 the Green Beret was not authorized yet.

The "candy stripers", my now ex-father in law's nicer discription, were a shock to me when I first arrived at Ft. Bragg in 83. Ok, to be exact the pregnant female wearing the green beret was. It is my understanding that the tab was created because of support soldiers authorized to wear the headgear of their parent unit. Since prior to this (candy stripers) only qualified SF wore the green beret.
Is this myth or one of the reasons for the Special Forces tab?
Thank you for the clarification.

Candy Stripe
I hit Bragg in 82 and remember pregnant females with Green Berets.
I believe that was one of the reasons for the creation of the SF Tab. Remember when it first was authorized alot of guys had to choose between Ranger and SF Tabs because you were only allowed to wear one at a time.
When we formed the 112th Signal the guys with 18E MOS wanted to wear a Green Beret with the 112th flash and crest. However, they were told to wear the same headgear as the rest of the unit (maroon beret regardless if you were SF, Airborne or a leg).
I wonder how that has evolved over the years.

Last time I checked, SF personnel assigned to SOSCOM wore the Green Beret and the appropriate flash.

You are correct Sir !! I was with the 2/321st FA (DIVARTY) The Flash was red with two gold stipes up until 1987-88 then solid red with the "Loyalty" crest.
