Be careful what you say in this country

Just when you thought the largest muslim country can set example and show what moderate Islam looks like, you got this
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-for-two-years
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...u-need-to-know

All this is based on misquote from a speech about the Koran's admonishing not to elect non-muslim for government official....
oh, and add hundreds of thousands hard liners muslims rallying outside the court during the proceeding.

Unsurprisingly, the judge sets harsher sentence than what the prosecutor had asked based on “the defendant did not feel guilty, the defendant’s act has caused anxiety and hurt Muslims”

I guess 99.9999% of us would easily be guilty of that blasphemy law.

Tolerance for the intolerant. Nothing new. Move along...

Seen somewhere on the interwebs, may not be exact quote:
"Moderate muslims are those who let radical muslims take action on their behalf."

I can honestly say I've never thought that.

He is/was a very popular mayor for Jakarta. Brash, intelligent but spoke his mind. He fell into that classic political bear trap that many before him have followed...never get get involved with comments relating to the koran in a muslim country.

To be fair, he did little wrong given what his opponents were doing; telling muslim voters they should not/could not vote for a non muslim mayor.

If he had kept his mouth shut, the issue would have passed over and he probably, in hindsight would still have won the elections.

Anyways....
