/quote/12th group alumni/Elton Johnson Jr
Remember when Army was putting pressure on the soldiers in 12th Group to learn Mandarin Chinese because of our capstone mission? Too bad they didn't have the Internet back then or YouTube or laptops. We could have learned this way. I would have picked up the language in no time at all

We, (Co C/2nd Bn) were told we could do Mandarin or Korean. Lots of ODAs spent lots of time in S Korea in the 80's.

Group HQ was in the Chicago area...Arlington Heights. We almost never saw ANY of those guys, and rarely saw our Bn HQ folks in Oklahoma. In fact, we saw our Company HQ in San Diego only 3-4 times per year.
It was nice.

It depended on the BN. Either Mandarin or Russian. In 3rd BN we were Russian speakers and I spent maybe the best year of my life at DLI learning it.
