Shin Splints Recovery

I have been having a problem with shin splints in both of my legs for the past couple of weeks. A friend of mine who is a personal trainer told me that I should relax them as much as possible. However, that is a little hard to do in the Army without going on a profile. Maybe it's just a pride thing, but I really don't want to be standing in formation with a bunch of slackers. Also, I have been doing Crossfit for a few months. Could these workouts be the cause or make the injury worse? What would you recommend as a recovery plan?

Thank you

Following instructions and filling out your profile would be a good start.
