Pictures were topic centric. If the photographer was shooting a veteran or AD group, they had to display their toys.

If you look at some of the old cowboy pics, you see outlandish chaps, hats, mulit-guns, even horses & saddles. All provided by the photographer.

Additionally, Photographers at that time had to use long(20-30 sec) exposures. they often had "rigs" that help the picturee stay still. Smiles were not "in", thug was..
