Worlds longest tunnel

Many tunnels crisscross the Swiss Alps, and Gotthard Pass already has two — the first, also for trains, was built in 1882. But the Gotthard Base Tunnel is a record-setter: It eclipses Japan's 53.8-kilometer Seikan Tunnel as the world's longest and bores deeper than any other tunnel, running about 2.3 kilometers (1.4 miles) underground at its maximum depth.

Perhaps we should start on repairing our infrastructure let alone begin building our future...

And they did it "on time, on budget". When was the last time an infrastructure project in the US achieved that? Pretty scary, huh?

A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.

And I was worried about what they now probably call their surface fortifications......

Here is another marvel from Europe, the Dutch put a tunnel under a highway in one weekend.

That's nice, when was the last time the Swiss put a man on the moon? When were they the deciding factor in a recent war? When have they interceded and saved a nation and its people from war, starvation, or a deadly virus? The Swiss can only care about the Swiss.

And how many billions or trillions of criminal war money do they still secret away in their banks?

Since it was a question, as Switzerland is 1.5 times the size of the Dallas Ft Worth Metro Area they probably haven't put to many men on the moon. To a small degree I see they played a part in Bosnia. Between their Engineering, biotechnology, medical devices, technology and Pharmaceutical Industries they have contributed heavily to agriculture, manufacturing, energy, transportation, and health science.

Then knowing some about your interests there is the wine, cheese, meats, and dairy.

I have always found it interesting they have been the ones to secure the Vatican and the pope in the context of their history of supplying soldiers to many of the European Armies through out history. The money earned in those foreign excursions was used to start their banking industry and their Army is still explicitly tied to the banking system. It would be hard to argue that they fared much better than most of Germany's neighbors did in WWII much of which they worked very hard to make it inconvenient for Germany to occupy the country.

I wish our country would invest in itself and it's people in similar fashion.

And that same "net worth"? Must be nice having keeping a lions share of the WWII "spoils" and then having your "clients" hung one by one, who's going to know?

Yeah, most of the older swiss bankers are right up there with hitler in their beliefs.

And yeah I love "swiss cheese" made right here in Wisconsin.

As enthusiastic as I get about the Swiss culture I'm not one to justify the banking industry anywhere. I concur with you with the observation it is conveniently difficult to return deposits to people or entities that no longer exists. Many civil actions have occurred since and some of the wealth was returned to descendants, creditors and governments. More recently the countries of Eastern and Southern Europe had a choice between currencies when they refinanced, the Swiss Frank being much more stable than their own volatile currencies many chose to use the SF, when their own currencies were devalued many of those loans went into foreclosure. You will find Swiss Bankers in every viable market in the world one acquaintance runs operations out of Hong Kong as an example.

Then there is this.
Probably long forgotten but there was an expression at one time " You aren't SF unless you have"
