Back when we moved to Hermosa Beach, in the mid '80s, we'd bike up to Venice occasionally and stop the watch the action. This was always mid-week when the young guys were at work. There were a lot of "actual" old guys in their 60s, or older, there hefting some heavy iron (and once-young old, but fit, women). I imagine a lot of them dated back to the beach/surfer movies days of the '60s.
