Homeland security a growing field

Homeland security a growing field

Wondering what to major in?

http://fayobserver.com/articles/2013...ac=fo.military

"Twelve years after the 9/11 attacks, homeland security has become a common phrase and a burgeoning industry in the United States.

And it is now the focus of programs at two local universities.

Campbell University has begun offering a four-year undergraduate degree in homeland security. Fayetteville State University has established a Center for Defense and Homeland Security, which it says will foster education, research and the commercialization of scientific technologies used in mitigating and recovering from natural and man-made catastrophes........."

Get hooked up at a government funded think tank and you're set for life.

Funny, I thought we already had a name for "homeland security" and those names were: The United States Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Air Force.....

homeland security, what a joke, next thing you know we'll be giving armored combat vehicles, machineguns, drones, top secret security clearances etc to a bunch of unscreened, loyal only to themselves (and the current administration), no leadership, and if it gets dangerous "I can quit anytime I want to" "CIVILIANS"!

Screw the military, I'll go get a homeland security job, better pay, better/safer conditions, better benefits, and I can quit if I don't like it.

Kinda sums up my assessment of CIA/NSA too.

An undergrad major? Heck, it's been a graduate certificate program at UCCS here for 10 years:

I couldn't agree more

I'm sure there will be plenty of those "civilian" types there, but isn't that due more to the average mentality and mind set of people today...and isn't that due to their upbringing? I'm a civilian and if I could afford it, I'd do my job for free. My point, is that some are committed for right reasons.

Screw the military, I'll go get a homeland security job, better pay, better/safer conditions, better benefits, and I can quit if I don't like it.

The private sector could use people like you. Just remember civilians cry easily.

No one will ever destroy America, except us!

I have said this myself, time and time again and couldn't agree more.

Whole Lotta Civvies

After 2001, the number of Law Enforcement retirees exploded. The reason was the impending reduction of "earned" benefits, and lack of funding to pay for existing bennies.

So, all those NYPD types and major urban police force types flooded the private sector market. The one area they couldn't compete was where Federal contracts were, as most of the people holding those positions were Veterans or former Federal Employees with Military or other types of Federal Training Creds.

Whalla - Now there is a surge in Homeland Security courses and certifications.

I went through it where I work. Except for the top guy, I am the ONLY Veteran remaining. The place has been flooded with retired NJ Law Enforcement types.

Due to an OJI knee injury and because Workers Comp sucks, I was forced to take a disability retirement from the fire service. I’ve had two failed knee surgeries and need a partial knee replacement; however, WC will not approve it, because I’m not 50 years old. I’m only 39.

So, I’ve applied for Fire Chief and Emergency Management jobs, most of which are above my experience and qualification levels. I have also been accepted to Texas A&M grad school for a degree in Homeland Security. I value your opinions and advice, so I was a bit dismayed after reading this thread; although, I do understand your viewpoint. I am a public servant at heart and my calling is to serve, which is why I’m pursuing this degree. I’ve had a long-held desire to learn about counterterrorism and how to defend America against attacks.

My question is: How can I make the best use of this degree towards those ends? Are there companies or agencies that I should consider to make the biggest difference? The pay/benefits, etc. are not my concern (I’m not looking for a cushy, govt. gravy train).

Really, I’m just looking for advice from people who are experts in the field. Unfortunately, after 16 years of service, my fire service Brotherhood hasn’t really helped me out much. Sorry, for the long post and I appreciate any advice you may send my way. Thanks.
